Heuchera 'Frosted Violet' for Paul :-)

Actually much darker than the picture shows, pretty dull here today so the flash went off :-)
Spotted this on another forum earlier in the year the colour then was a wonderful purple/violet so when I spotted it in the garden centre had to have it, just the edges are purple at this time of year but still lovely :-)

Definitely one for the wishlist.

I had two heuchera...one inparticular was thriving and I went out one day in the summer to find it completely separated from it's roots. Found on investigation I had an infestation of weevils. Crafty little things as they do all their destruction under the soil and it's too late by the time they are discovered. So disappointing. The other heuchera I have is still healthy but not thriving (staying small and not bushing out much).

Is it ok then to purchase new heuchera plants and put them into the ground at this time of year? Everything is looking so sad now that winter is here and the colour has mainly gone from the garden.

I know I need patience as this is the first winter for our revamped garden...not easy though :( It's time for plotting and planning I suppose....did out the gardening books again and have a browse!

Jacquie, you can get a nematode treatment for vine weevils at your garden centre. It has to be watered in. It might be an idea to do that first before replanting. As long as the ground isn't frozen, and the forecast isn't for a hard frost you could replant with pot-grown plants. I have found 'Marmalade' to be an excellent overwintering heuchera and 'Caramel' is still looking lovely, as are the 'Blackberry Jam' that I have. Some of the others, particularly the lime green ones, are not doing as well but they will be lovely again in the spring I'm sure. The silvery leaved ones still seem to be looking quite good too, but some of the peachy coloured ones are quite sad looking right now. I hope you find some good ones anyway! :))

Thankyou Sheila and Gattina :-)
Sorry to hear about your heuchera Jacquie, luckily vine weevil isn't something I've had a lot of problems with here, but then again I don't grow many plants in pots more a get them in the ground girl, hate watering pots,as Karen says as long as the ground isn't frozen its fine to plant now, I've bought a few heucheras this year and they're all still looking pretty good hope you find some nice ones and good luck with your garden planning, exciting time look forward to seeing it progress :-))

Thanks for the tips Karen & Simbad. I will see about getting some treatment for the soil before planting more. The one that I lost was purple (I bought it at a plant fair when I met up with Sanbaz so was not pleased to have the memory of that nice meet-up spoiled by a poorly plant).

If the weather stays as mild as it is now I should be in with a chance to plant more :)

I think they are beautiful plants and I'm determined to find a bit of shade for one or two this year.

I can't wait for my next trip back to the UK - I have a long plant shopping list, at the head of which are about 12 varieties of heuchera.

Ginellie and Gattina....seems we are all eager to get some of these heuchera into our much-loved gardens. Hope you both manage it this year.

The one I lost to vine weevil was "Berry Smoothie"...I'll try finding another as it was a very pretty plant (and I'm sure a few other varieties while I'm at it...lol).

I'm planning to dig up a bit of our rather scrubby, weed-infested lawn to make a small shade garden this spring. I have to wait until OH has decided where the base for the gazebo is going and dug out the footings and laid the concrete. Concrete can't be laid until there's no likelihood of frost. It could be a bit of a wait..........Keep those hostas and heucheras and ferns on the top shelf for me, somebody......

3 Jan, 2012

We all seem to have a craze for these this year don't we Ginellie:-)
You'll need to bring an empty case or 2 then Gattina :-)
I'd be too impatient to wait Gattina, why do men take sooo long, lol, mine has been making me a paved area at the bottom of the garden for the last 2 years nearly done but still not quite finished, if I nag him he'll just take longer, lol.

Save your breath, ladies - whingeing and dropping brick sized hints has no positive effect at all, and we get labelled "nags". I'm off outside in a bit to start a little light digging in the bit where the gazebo's going (one day) to go. I've been waiting for three years, and we actually bought the gazebo itself a year ago, so if he doesn't do it, I'll do it myself. With luck he'll think my handiwork "Useless" and finish it off.

I often do that if I want something doing Gattina he usually comes and takes over because "I'm doing it wrong", we've just bought an arch in the B&Q sale might go out and try to construct it myself ;-) lol.

I'd wait until the weather improves a tad, Simbad - you don't want to get blown away, do you? Also, if the weather is nice, it might encourage OH to come out into the garden and "take over". You've got to be canny about these things. A bit like the "Horse whisperer" - speak softly and reassuringly and approach from the side........

4 Jan, 2012

That is a real beauty, another for my wish list! Happy NewYear Kathy to and your family;0)

Lol good idea Gattina, he's spent today fixing a gate that was broken in the wind yesterday so I'll leave it till the weathers better, the way its blowing tonight he'll be fixing it again tomorrow.
Thanks Carole :-) a very Happy New Year to you too :-)

Gattina, you had me laughing with your "horse whisperer" analogy :)

I know from reading many blogs on GoY there are many hubbies who really do take an interest in the garden....my hubby chooses to help frequently although neither of us are much good on DIY...he'll dig and plant for me though... and of course we both enjoy lazing out there when the sun occasionally shines! lol

The winds are sure strong...not surprised you had to repair the gate, Simbad...hope it holds as these winds just aren't letting up.

Roll on spring eh? Happy gardening :)

5 Jan, 2012

Mines quite good at DIY Whistonlass, he also plans where the borders and beds are going and cuts the grass, which takes over an hour, maybe thats why he doesn't mind me constantly extending borders, less to cut, lol, but I do all the planting weeding and seed growing, he does have an allotment which is supposed to be his domain but for some reason I have to grow all the veg plants and plant them, he likes the digging bit :-)
The winds have eased here at last, a couple of trees down in our little wood and the swing seat had been blown over, luckily not damaged, but apart from that everythings fine, hope there's no damage where you are:-)
Yes roll on spring, won't be long now, the first snowdrops are out here and a hellebore's in bud :-)
