Winter Dusk ~ at 4.30 pm?

As the sun went down, the silhouettes of the trees appeared starkly against the cool winter sky.

As well as poetic....

12 Feb, 2012

great pic Sticki !!!

12 Feb, 2012

thank you!!

should have written a haiku really shouldnt I?!!

12 Feb, 2012

'I love sunsets!' said Sticky.

Patently, what a perfect picture :)))

12 Feb, 2012

thanks severnside!

something about them that just completely fascinate me, sadly they disappear too quickly otherwise i would be there taking photos for hours!!

12 Feb, 2012

Thats jsut beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)))))))))))))))))

12 Feb, 2012

thanks pixi, if i could paint it i would!!

12 Feb, 2012

Sunsets are fundamental to me. Like some people chase storms :)

12 Feb, 2012

yep, im guilty of that too!!! not the storms, although i do love to watch lightening!

i have spent hours on a beach in the hebrides trying to get the perfect shot!! it was about 10.30 at night when i finally stopped taking pictures!!

12 Feb, 2012

It can be a rush sometimes when you realise a good one is developing to get to a suitable vantage point. That's when it is definitely chasing the sunset. Then when you finally get through the last hedge or over the crown of the hill it's like seeing an old friend :)

12 Feb, 2012

I do that with the moon...Never going to get a great pic but it is time well spent looking.

12 Feb, 2012

That's beautiful, Sticki.

12 Feb, 2012

I live in a very frustrating place! I can't see the sunset from here due to buildings and hills, and I have yet to find a good vantage point nearby.

12 Feb, 2012

I'm sure you will Pimp, ever tried using filters to lose the glare?

12 Feb, 2012

Same here pimms, I keep trying though.
Thanks oji.

12 Feb, 2012

That must be frustrating Sticki, though you have fantastic walks around you judging by your pics. It's difficult to work out what you see around your area, the topography is very varied between flat and hilly. Here it's all escarpments, simply stopping off anywhere from Cheltenham down to Bath does the trick.

12 Feb, 2012

It is very frustrating SS I shoot off in the car as soon as I see it looks like a good sunset but I still haven't found the right place.
Part of the problem is not much time between seeing it's going to be a lovely sunset and the sun then going down!

12 Feb, 2012

Yes would make a lovely painting! :)

12 Feb, 2012

quite fiddly though pixi

12 Feb, 2012

thanks ML, now you could paint it im sure!! as could pixi!

12 Feb, 2012

Thats a lovely photo Sticki....very beautiful indeed.

12 Feb, 2012

thanks karen, i was just walking back to my car, turned round and there it was glowing through the trees!

12 Feb, 2012

Beautiful pic Sticki. Not to worry about painting . . . you're an artist with the camera!

12 Feb, 2012

i do enjoy taking the pictures sheila, would like to be able to paint it though ~ perhaps i could trace it with a paint brush!!!

12 Feb, 2012

just stunning Sticki, i've been after a pic like that for ages down here... :-)

12 Feb, 2012

its all to do with right time right place i think SL, just lucky!
i had to crop out the roof of a car that was just across the bottom of the shot!

12 Feb, 2012

Ah - I must learn to crop! Was just thinking that we're lucky here - we can see sunsets from the house, but if I tried a photo I might include neighbour's houses. I'll have a go next time there's a good one!

Yes, trace the photo . . . you could no doubt paint if you tried Sticki. :))

12 Feb, 2012

when i resize my photos for putting on here sheila i right click on them and edit, within that same setting i can also crop the photo!

12 Feb, 2012

Oooh thanks for the tip Sticki, will try it sometime soon.

12 Feb, 2012

:-)

12 Feb, 2012

Sticki,

If you want to paint sunsets, use acrylic paint. Cheap student stuff is fine. The colours to mix starting from the horizon up are peach, yellow, white, duck egg blue, blue. Put a blob of each at the right level to the left and sweep across repeatedly from left to right with a broad soft brush until they blend in a perfect garaduation. Then paint in trees in very dark grey. With practise and your own choice of colours from looking carefully at sunsets you'll be very good in no time.

12 Feb, 2012

Now that's really beautiful. Added to favs :o)

12 Feb, 2012

Sounds good advice Severnside. Do acrylics merge into each other like watercolour??

12 Feb, 2012

thank you Severn, thats really interesting, will it also work with guache? i love the brilliance of acrylic paint so i just might have a go!! thank you.

thank you hywel, sunsets and trees are lovely arent they?

12 Feb, 2012

Gorgeous

12 Feb, 2012

trace!!!!!!!! shocking lol!

12 Feb, 2012

thanks N3!

is that not allowed pixi??

12 Feb, 2012

Not in my classes! lol One woman who could never draw people..all of a sudeen was doing these wonderful,( tho animated) drawing of people in her paintings..I knew she was either tracing or using a projector, I quizzed her about it one day and she went red and claimed no! she hadnt..but I know!!!!!!! haha
Anyway to each their own I guess..I kinda think its cheating..anyway how could you trace ALL those trees!
I would advise the trees be painted using burnt umber and paynes grey mixed..might try it if I have time Sticki. Or get me ladies Monday morning class to try it! :)

12 Feb, 2012

brilliant photo Sticki

12 Feb, 2012

I agree...great capture...:>)

12 Feb, 2012

i shall remember the colours, thanks pixi, it would be nearly impossible to trace all those i agree.

thanks yorkshire and motinot

Sheilabub, with a little extender/thinner to slow the drying time they're a dream. Once you're used to it you'll know how to brush slowly to start the bars merging then faster until they finally become indistinguishable. Oils are as easy but I prefer the simple water base and quick drying time of acrylics. The white bar beteen the peachy pink / creamy yellow and the blues above is to prevent them mixing to make green. It's also how sunsets actually are.

Sticki, I started with gouache and was reasonably happy but now I would see it as only worth the limited blend ability if I wanted that style, it's much nearer to water colour in that respect.

For a 12"x18" canvas I would use a 2" diy house decorating brush with the soft ends to the bristles. Obviously clean it between the lower colours and the top colours or use two. With practice you'll be knocking out immaculate sunsets and it'll just be a choice of colour combinations. One of my favourites is pink up to yellow then dove grey rather than blue for a calm diffused look.

12 Feb, 2012

brilliant!! thanks severn, will try that out sometime.

12 Feb, 2012

one day maybe ML, san would definitely be able to do this. and i think pimpernel could as well as you.

12 Feb, 2012

fabulous picture Sticki, think I might just get my paints out again;0)

13 Feb, 2012

oh i hope you do, thanks pansy, and if you do please show us the picture!!!

13 Feb, 2012

Stunning picture, oh to be able to paint !!

14 Feb, 2012

would be nice wouldnt it DD!

14 Feb, 2012

Quite a surprising number of very famous artists have used "aids". I believe Canaletto, Vermeer and Joshua Reynolds used a "camera obscura" and in the last years of the nineteenth century, photography began to make it's appearance as an artists' reference. I seem to remember hearing that Degas used photographs to help capture movement. So, Sticki and Pixi, it isn't cheating, it's being resourceful.
I love this picture, Sticki - the light is quite cold for a sunset, isn't it? We lack decent sunsets round here, too, as the mountains obscure the sinking sun long before the colours start to get theatrical.

15 Feb, 2012

great picture of sunset!

15 Feb, 2012

thanks gattina, that is interesting, it is cold but then it was february!! i have the same problem with lack of sunsets ~ but no mountain either ~ just houses and hills!!! this was about 6 miles away ~ on the way to the lovely tea shop.

thank you Junna

15 Feb, 2012

Actually, I've just walked the 2 kilometres home down from the village, and I was gobsmacked by the sunset reflected off the mountain above, the EASTERN view across the hills was all luminous pink and gold, and I didn't have my camera! Darn It!. If the weather holds, I might try again tomorrow, and hope also to see the group of three brave little partridge sitting on a pile of snow by the roadside, all puffed up and watching me warily as I walked past them about 5' away. Maybe they were too cold and exhausted to fly off.

15 Feb, 2012

oh it sounds amazing!! you painted a good picture with words anyway.
i hardly ever leave home without the camera!!!

15 Feb, 2012

What a lovely pic Sticki, so atmospheric with those trees. We returned to using acrylics at my art class this week so perhaps I'll have a go at doing a "tree" sunset for my homework using all these useful tips. GoY is so informative and not just for gardening isn't it! :o))

15 Feb, 2012

thanks lily, yes i agree, hope you enjoy your homework ~ will you post it on here?

15 Feb, 2012

No chance Sticki, I'm not that good..........yet! LOL

15 Feb, 2012

the most important thing is you enjoy it

15 Feb, 2012

Very therapeutic, sloshing paint around.

15 Feb, 2012

It is . . . especially at this time of year. I must have another go very soon!

16 Feb, 2012

Reminds me, the kitchen could do with a pot of paint and a quiet day to brush it on.........

16 Feb, 2012

Brilliant Sticki! I expect to see a painting by you any time soon too. Amazing number of artists on here...some with a paintbrush...some with a camera. Maybe gardening and art attracts a certain type of person? Lovers of beauty? :-)

18 Feb, 2012

thank you BA, very kind of you.

not so sure about the painting, i would love to be able to but i think photos are easier!!!

18 Feb, 2012

The handy thing about photography is that you can ditch the failures with great ease, without having to waste a lot of effort and paint.

19 Feb, 2012

Yes very true gattina, just a few clicks!

19 Feb, 2012

Yes I know about famous artists using things like camera obscura etc..i was horrified when i learnt that! lol
All I meant was ,,at my classes they are there to learn to draw and paint properly..whats the point in tracing then saying you didnt do it..when i know they did..thats all :))))))

19 Feb, 2012

Good point pixi!

19 Feb, 2012

Thanks Sticki..I know you know lol ;)

19 Feb, 2012

teachers do!!!

19 Feb, 2012
