It's a gold-leaved lilac bush, Pimpernel. It grows well, but hasn't flowered yet. Sorry I don't know the botanical name - lost the label.

I think it is Syringa vulgaris Aurea. There is a photo of an exact match to mine here:

The new leaves get darker towards the tips, almost a purply shade.
