When I was very small (about 5) there was a shop opposite our house run by 3 sisters - the Misses Hunt (all 3 were dwarves) and when my mother (who was a dressmaker) went in to buy anything, they'd take me off to a little back room, give me a glass of lemonade and let me play with all the odd, unmatched buttons from their stock. Then one day, they gave me an old cigar box filled with about a hundred of these - metal, mother-of-pearl, glass, china, wood, etc.. I think I must have got every bit as much fun out of those buttons as any modern child does out of their electronic games. It was one of my favourite "toys". There were one or two glass ones very like this one, Pimp., but black, not coloured. Very distinctive, and this picture has brought it all back to me.

mum used to have several "button tins" - cake tins with assortments of buttons in; most were plain, but she had one full of fancy buttons and it was amazing to go through them and try to match them up. none like this, though!

Incredibly unusual, Pimm's! Yes, I like your tin-of-bits idea - the chance for kids to use their imaginations more :))

I too used to love tipping out the button box onto a newspaper and sorting through it. It was easy to pick up the paper afterwards and pour them all back into the box.
