What an Ace[r]!

What an Ace[r]!

Acer's amaze me, always something different, so colourful, like green stars on a red stem, acer sangokaku.

I've just done a search on this,Sticki..all Goyers pics and all the lovely colour changes of it...I noticed most seem to have them in pots..I might seriously think about having one..just a bit concerned about the eventual height..I have a good position for it,sheltered and a bit shaded..mmm,brain working overtime now .....

10 May, 2012

mine is in the ground but i know stevie and bampy have theirs in pots. i think bampy said it was too cold and windy where he was to put them in the ground.

i have had mine for at least 3 years, maybe 4. it is quite sheltered and the soil is acidic. its about 4 foot tall ~ at the most.

10 May, 2012

i love this one Sticky, this is the coral bark one i had, beautiful red new growth on it..

10 May, 2012

hard to get a nice picture i found surreylad but its a lovely plant.

10 May, 2012

winter time it really stands out i find, yes it's difficult to get :-)

10 May, 2012

It says it can reach 3 metres with a 2 metre spread,Sticki..might be too big for me..so quite a slow grower then?

10 May, 2012

well maybe so, best to ask stevie, bampy or i think surreylad will know.

10 May, 2012

Mine died suddenly like one of Bampy's sticki but he got his back if you remember his blog with the ants, but i kept it in it's pot at about 6 feet quite happily for quite a few years....

10 May, 2012

My 'Atropurpureum' is still recovering - lost its leaves back in June/July last year. After that I've learned that red leaved acers are more susceptible to cold winds than others.

10 May, 2012

This is lovely Sticki...my very similar one is sick!!! So I'm jealous yours is looking great!

10 May, 2012

S.lad,Kasy and Meadow land..Thanks for the feedback, that is very helpful...Now,,have I got a nice pot to show one off at it's best ? Course I have..or if not,I will just have to go and get one..if I decide ! Lol....you can tell it might just become a possibility, can't you ? :o)

10 May, 2012

a definitely possibility bloomer!!

thanks scottish, i have a red one that is not too happy but thanks kasy you may have explained that for me.

are they very large pots ML? one of mine i had to take out of the pot cos it wasnt very happy.

SL i remember the ant blog!!

10 May, 2012

A really nice plant Sticki I love them but don't have one any more it is rather windy here for them.

10 May, 2012

thats a shame neellan, i would miss my acers; we have a lot of shade but maybe the trees that give that are also a wind break?

10 May, 2012

It sounds as if that is the case Sticki my garden is south facing so the two things Acers don't like bright sunshine (pardon my mention of the s word at this time) and strong winds so alas my poor Acers are no more :o(

10 May, 2012

Love the bright red stems on this one!
Sandra there are lovely Dwarf Acers around that are ideal for pots;0)

10 May, 2012

That's lovely!

I have a couple now too.

10 May, 2012

Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! love acers :)

11 May, 2012

Thanks Carole..so much choice with Acers now..and I haven't got any of them...I just need something to stand by the sheltered wall area ,between our adjoining houses...plenty of light, but not full sun...so should be ideal..thinking of that new pot I bought last summer, when we were out and about with you...still in the loft, unused ..!

11 May, 2012

Unused pot Bloomer??!! Lovely Acer Sticki, I have three in pots now but they are all red.

11 May, 2012

I know,Annella..very unusual ! I just wanted it ...and all pots in the garden were already full..eyes greedier than the belly,as they say Lol....It will be potted up before long :o)

Fabulous colours there Sticki !

11 May, 2012

That's beautiful, Sticki - I have never tried acers. Perhaps I should ....:-| !!!

11 May, 2012

oooh yes melchi ~ definitely ~ what type of soil do you have? mine is acidic and its a shady garden so they are happy enough but others grow them in pots very successfully.

11 May, 2012

I think my soil is neutral to acid, which is fairly easy, I think. I'm running out of space though! I keep stealing a bit more from the lawn (Joke! - grass-ish more like!) but the only way to go is the front garden. Why can't I get
more enthusiastic about my front garden??? Anyone else out there identify with that?

11 May, 2012

ah yes!!!! i hardly dare admit this on a gardening site but i all but ignore the front garden!!!!! i just like the back garden. sorry!!

oh and we have a green area ~ moss not lawn!!

11 May, 2012

Because you park a car in it Melch..?

11 May, 2012

thanks HB

my OH is retiring early and going to do a part time job, he says he is going to do the front garden!!!! i said i would do a blog on the progress!!!!!!!!

11 May, 2012

Makes me smile but I'm sure he will make it look good, he is much more of a perfectionist than I am. The only thing is he likes different styles and plants to those I would choose!

11 May, 2012

Gorgeous one, isnt it :^)

11 May, 2012

It is Daylily, I love it.

Sorry missed some comments,
PP it was the red stems I liked when I first saw this one
How lovely meanie, which ones have you got?
Me too pixi
ML I remember yours in pots now, they are tremendous.
Thanks annella, I love the red ones but I just might like the green one tiny bit more?
Thanks Amy, I like these colours too.

11 May, 2012

No, Pimpernel, the car is on the road! I just can't get enthusiastic about the front. It's reasonably tidy, and I have pots either side of the front door, and containers on the wall in summer, but that's it. I keep the moss short (identify with that, Sticki?!) and I have a couple of large skimmia japonicas which I love, but I can't get turned on by it! My husband is not a gardener, Homebird, so the front remains ok but relatively unloved (although today he did tie back the roses round the door in case they blinded the postman!)

12 May, 2012

Hi Sticki, I have 10 acers in our small garden. 4 in pots, 3 in the front flowerbeds and three in the back. I prune mine during the winter. Any branches crossing each other and it ends up too thick. I prune to let the air through. I have to watch out for scale insects that cling on to the wood. Acers are very attractive though and seem happy in pots. I feed mine occassionally with ordinary feed that I do the flowers with.

beauty

14 May, 2012

Thanks Linda, I love them too and that's helpful advice, I shall. Take a careful look at mine this autumn.
Thanks Paul.

14 May, 2012

Beautiful tree, we used to sell those at the nursery I worked at. We've been able to grow them in our harsh climate, late frosts in fall and early frosts in spring are the biggest problems for us but they seem to do fine in a sheltered spot.

15 May, 2012

Glad you like them and can grow them too Rk, have you found that some years it seems to be slightly differently coloured?

15 May, 2012

Not that I've noticed, has yours been changing colors?

16 May, 2012

I thought i had seen this one in the GC with the red stems but bright green leaves, some of these seem to have different shades in the leaves year on year ~ i think stevietheterrible did a blog about that.

16 May, 2012

Stunning......must buy some more!!

16 May, 2012

Definitely dotty! Always room for more!
