Summer Blue

Summer Blue

Shoo fly plant, I do wonder how they make up some of these names! I think I shall google this one to find out!! I bought it because I loved the blue and the spotted leaves are quite interesting.

I found this explanation on the internet

'Clover bloom, from the nightshade family, has large lobed leaves, and large blue flowers with rounded petals. The juices from the foliage and roots were mixed with milk in a dish, which was then set out to attract flies. When the flies fed from this concoction, they died, thus the origin of the common name, Shoofly Plant.'

Well...if it was related in any way to a fly, Sticki...it's probably regretting having that little 'snack' now...

Just desserts, perhaps??

very good karen, the only thing is flies are not supposed to like them!!!

lovely flower. Makes you wonder about "shoo-fly pie", though! as mentioned in an old American song, can't remember the title.

Ingredients

1 (9 inch) pie shell
1 cup molasses
3/4 cup hot water
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup shortening

perhaps its like our squashed fly biscuits [was it garibaldi???]

also found this on wikipaedia

The pie may get its name because the molasses attracts flies that must be "shooed" away.[2]
The shoofly pie's origins may come from the treacle tart with the primary difference being the use of molasses rather than golden syrup.[3] A Montgomery pie is similar to a shoofly pie, except lemon juice is usually added to the bottom layer and buttermilk to the topping. A chess pie is also similar, but it is unlayered and made with corn syrup.
