Really glad you like it :-) It's good to have you all as a sense check - especially as I've just started to make a living out of garden design. SO much to learn! :-)

Looks lovely :) How long did your Hakonechloa take to get to that size Nicky? I bought one last year but it's not been doing too well so far ...

Hi Geranium, I moved my Kakonechloa, to another spot, it was doing nothing much, but has come on a treat now...trial and error with some plants....

Hi Geranium, I planted the Hakonechloa four years ago. I bought 5 x 2lt plants and planted them 3 per square metre. My soil's really sandy so before planting I dug in lots of farmyard manure (1 large bag per sq metre about a shovel deep). Apart from chopping the lot down at the end of February I don't touch it. And I don't feed it either as I think the nitrogen might make it sappy and flop over. Last year, I did add a 7cm mulch of bark chippings to help lock in more moisture and I think this has helped. The Hakonechloa receives sun all morning and then it's in shade from lunch time onwards. I reckon soil preparation has a lot to do with it. The soil's light with lots of organic matter. Hakonechloa usually prefers moist free draining soils in partial sun/shade. By the way... I just read your profile - I tried growing Pelargoniums and was hopeless - overwatered them I think ;). Nicky.

Thanks for the advice, mine's been in a container but I'm going to plant it out soon (well, soonish, it might be next year now) into a border which is currently being dug up, so I've got the opportunity to improve the (clay) soil before planting it. I wondered if it'd got too waterlogged in the pot this year so will bear the free-draining thing in mind. Thanks : )

I hardly water my pelargoniums at all, the lack of attention seems to suit them. I've kept them in my conservatory all summer this year though because of all the rain!
