The Christmas gift

Aleyna

The Christmas gift (Epiphyllum oxypetalum)

Last night the Queen bloomed. A nice fragrance invaded the balcony. This early morning I woke up to take a picture before it closes. Photo taken from my "balcony garden", 09/12/2012

Lovely looking flower, what is its scent like?

14 Dec, 2012

HI Balcony, my special GOY friend .... we are both "balcony" gardners :)
It has a scent similar to "lirio do brejo" (Hedychium coronarium), but way lighter.....
Pity it just stands for a night.

I looked up the Hedychium coronarium & it seems in some countries it's considered a weed! In Cuba it grows wild in a mountainous area. It also seems that the Cuban ladies used to like it a lot. They don't say if it is still very popular today. The ladies used to love its scent & it is know as the "White Ginger Lily"

You are right! The Hedychium coronarium is a weed, on wet places.... grows wild covering huge areas... its fragrance is very caracteristic.
Also here in Brazil it is called white ginger lily or marsh lily... the african descendants call it "Jasmim do Cabo" ... (Cape Jasmin).

That is stunning. I'm a balcony gardener. I can't wait for Spring to come. So I can get going, I've already started seeding.

Yes, I agree 100%!
GOY is a very friendly group, they forgive all my english mistakes :)

25 Jan, 2013

Haha, I like that.
Do you sow your own seeds? I don’t have much luck with Busy Lizzie. Could you help me?

25 Jan, 2013

Hi there Maria,
Busy Lizzies (impatients, right) are like weed here, it grows everywhere.
This is what I found about it:"Sow seeds 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost date. Germination takes 10 to 20 days at 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a sterile soil mix, because young impatiens seedlings are subject to damping off."
I hope it will help :)

Hi & welcome to GoY, Mariamasom! :-)) Like you & Aleyna I garden on a balcony as well. My wife & I have been living in this block of flats, on the groundfloor, for over 11 years now.

I've uploaded 100s of photos of my balcony over the last few years! I say "my balcony" because my wife seldom goes out there! I do all the gardening, occasionally growing flowers for her that she suggests, she is Spanish & she loves Carnations. I always have some pots of them growing on the balcony especially for her - although they are a plant I like very much, too!

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your balcony pics during the year. :-))

That's a gorgeous Epiphyllum oxypetalum! I have one which is growing crazy! It's getting very tall and large. It was a small cutting from my former neighbor a couple of years ago.

Was this photo taken in the morning? Typically, they bloom at night.

Yes Delonix, It bloomed at night, I took the picture righ before it closed.
