If you need to it it back, do it as soon as you can after the flowers are fading. That way, you might get more flowers the next year....if the summer is decent enough to ripen the new stems! I never managed more than a few flowers after cutting mine back.

thanx karen it flowered twice last year but as you say only an odd flower secong round, wasnt sure when i first got it but now its established i love it :o) x

You could always stick up some more trellis and see how big it grows! :)

Looks a lovely show Sandra. Ours got cut back because Gerry had to mend the fence, but we do have new growth and a few flowers.

Fantastic San - love this. We have one, which I also thought was thriving on neglect, but it's a quarter the size of yours!

The Alpinas are easy and rewarding...as long as you don't mind a wall covered with dead looking thatch all winter! but this looks like an ideal situation for leaving it to it's own devices.

karen it does look like dead thatch in winter but the wall looks bad anyway and it rewards me when in bloom so i can cope with winter look.

I love this cascading effect...very pretty display. I am thinking of doing something similar with lobelia but this plant looks like it will fill out more so I might chose this instead.

Thank GM, these do grow very fast and if you trim after flowers u should get more later,
In fact I have to get bigger trellis for next year so heavy.
