So glad you mentioned Butterball Janey - I've been wondering which Malus to get and this looks stunning. Just found one at a place in Ely, with a BOGOF offer!! so I'm getting a purple birch too, for free.

I'm still on the look out for butterball. I was going to have a John Downie as well, but so far no cigar with that one either. Plenty of time though. I have Indian Magic and Evereste so far.

What great deal Sheila......purple birch, I'm going to have a look at that! Birches are one of my most favourite trees, really amazing for taking pollution from the atmosphere. My two crabs came from Morrisons, the Butterball, planted in a half barrel has done much better so far than the Red Sentinel.....both lovely though...:))

Yes, a very dark tree Sheila........pretty in the right setting, should be great in your lovely garden!

I do for my garden Karen as I need as much light as possible! I do have an early flowering cherry with dark purple leaves and have to keep it pruned as it would suck the light from the garden. I'm looking forward to seeing my golden birch this spring, really pretty yellow leaves all summer....:))

Thanks Janey...Excited? Well, yes, but at the moment I feel a bit frustrated as I still have so much work to do before spring. Still, it may not rain here tomorrow, which will give me a few hours to do a bit more. I've still got one apple tree to thin out and prune, and several large shrubs that need taking out to make room for flowers and better shrubs. I just want to get on with it. Every time I work out there, the garden feels a little more like 'home' and I felt for the first time today that I was beginning to really love my plot and get to know it like a new friend. That's what I need...not all this wet miserable weather! I'll tell you one thing I am really excited about...Sweetpeas! I have plenty of room to grow Sweetpeas now!! Lol...sorry, didn't mean to go on!

Ha ha....shall you start them soon? Lots to do, and a thrill to see what's popping up that you didn't know about,

Janey, I'm going to buy them this year as I shall be greenhouse-less for a long time. I'll buy young ones in the spring...see if I can get some autumn sown ones...

Brooklyn Botanic Gardens used to put out a booklet on Crabs. This was just the beginning for me. My two little ones, (which are misplaced) are Sargentii. I ordered them ten years ago, and the nursery man said, "we used to sell them as weeds". If you see a photo of the mature Sargentii, it is low and spreading. Think they should be in a group for greatest effect. But as usual, the plan changed and one landed smack in the middle of the garden... I do have a birch mixed in with the main group, and it is so pretty. Birches are iffy in Vermont.

I wonder why that is Wells...is it too warm in the summer for them or something? I think all your crab apples look stunning. I'm wondering if I've planted one of mine too close to the house.....not to worry, it can easily be moved, it's only been in the ground about a week!

I would love a M. sargentii . . . it would make a great bonsai!

Karen, I think it just depends on the kind of Crab. The one in front of the Deck is about 30 years old. It does grow, no question about that. Vermont is harsh in the winter.

I was amazed to see these in flower in Vermont, so I just looked up what Latitude you are on . . . between 40 and 45 degrees apparently, which is the same as Barcelona! But I guess it still gets cold up in the hills?

Sheila, I just googled Vermont. If you look at the images you can really see what a contrast there is summer to winter...absolutely beautiful in all seasons, and the second least populated state in the U.S.A. I would love to see New England one day!...probably in September, while it's still warm!

Such beautiful trees, Wells!

We planted these in the fall. The first two years so-so. But this photo blew us away too. Alot depends on the winter, and a slow Spring to get this kind of bloom.
