Klahanie
I bought it probably ten years ago for its Red stems I don't remember there being a name on it.
I have the much vaunted 'Orange Dream' that should be similar, as yet it is a very poor second, purchased as a present I have to persevere with it.

My Sango Kaku isn't happy at all. I've moved it in to a pot and hidden it out of sight. Hopefully it will recover now it's got better drainage and is sheltered from the wind. It certainly doesn't look anything like this!

That is beautiful :o)

Karen
your garden does look pretty exposed to the elements you may need to use the sheltered side of the bungalow until things grow larger in the garden.

Yes it is Brian, and I was fooled by the fact that there was an already existing and mature Acer Palmatum in the raised bed. But no...the Acers I planted aren't doing well in general.

They look wonderful Brian such beautiful colors :o) the leaves on mine are shriveling up I'm not sure if we have a problem or if its normal for this time of the year !

Amy it is the weather, way winds blow possibly I have two other in another part where there will be little colour the leaves on them are shrivelling and dropping off .I only show the good ones lol

Karen how about a walled garden area just think what you would be able to grow within that,Seriously maples can take two or more years to settle into there new home so don't bin them just yet.
14 Oct, 2014
OK Brian I won't. Walled area? You must have overestimated the space I have here! ;)

It looks a good size in your pictures I thought at least as large as mine ,a bit over quarter of an acre.

The whole plot is 2/3 acre Brian, but a lot of it is driveway! And being a 'bungalow' it has a bigger footprint than our old place by far. It's certainly big enough for me :) I would love to rip up some more Tarmac though...one day!

...or maybe not. I'd only be making more work for myself!

I'm glad you said that Brian because I looked at some in a G. Centre at the weekend and they looked like mine but with so many tree diseases going round it makes you wonder ...

I have the Orange Dream which is beautiful in the Spring then goes down hill from then on, Amy all our red ones look horrible, the only one looking good is Aureum worth its weight in gold!!
Brian when would be the best time to prune our Orange Dream, unfortunately it has to be done...

Dotty
I agree it is going to require a bit of shaping in the early years, mine produces a lot of long spindly growth and I cut it back by half about a month ago, think the best time is when the sap is going back bit like roses.
Have looked at the one I have and it is grafted but have also seen them on sale very cheaply this year and they are not grafted so either they are grown from seed (don't see how they would come true) or some form of micro propagation, wonder how they will grow fast slow ? on there own roots I think slow but possibly a better shape .

I have been very disappointed with my Orange dream and struggle to find a spot that's not windy in the garden. The only real success I've had is with Skeeter's Broom in the front garden.

Thanks for that Brian, going to tackle it today....not sure if ours is grafted, will check it out.

Annella
Not familiar with that one does indicate the leaf shape ?

Oval serrated palmate leaves ending in long-pointed tips Brian. It is deep burgundy in colour turning scarlet in autumn. I have it planted in very poor clay soil with 50% shade and it's doing really well. The rest are in pots and leafless by September if not before some years.

Sounds really nice, with that detailed description you could sell them.

Your Acer's are Beautiful, I noticed one of my Acer's in its pot has grown up through my Choisya "Sundance" sure does look nice :o))

The Acers have put on a really good show this Autumn. Most of the leaves have come off now though. Lovely picture BJS
