HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!
Just wishing friends old and new a happy gardening new year. I haven't been on the site for over a year, and I've missed it and you.
This is a gorgeous Amaryllis, a Christmas present from my daughter and when I opened it, the bud was already lifting the lid!

Hi Janey, Happy New Year. Welcome back.
My Amaryllises are 4 inches and 1 inch high. They seem to get bigger every day. This is my third year with these plants. Your is so beautiful you should try and have it flower next year. Not everyone can be bothered with the effort, but that is a beauty.

Hello Dawn! Happy 2018 to you and yours too, yes thank you Dawn....I'm hoping to create a wildlife pond....only small.....in the garden this spring. I've been lucky, a friend has given me her preformed pool liner, and I'll be hoping for more dragonflies...I have a large blue one that patrols the garden in the summer and bats too. Can't wait for spring...xxx

Thank you Janey. We’re in the same town - just swapped sides for a smaller garden. It’s currently a blank canvas, so I’m really looking forward to getting it built (hopefully in the next few weeks), and particularly to having a greenhouse to play in again :)) x

I bet you are...it's so exciting starting again...x

Hi Janey, it's nice to have you back with us once again! ?
That's a lovely Amaryllis your daughter gave you! I hope you can get it to flower again next year. If you need any help you can read some of the blogs I've written on GoY over the years with regards to Amaryllis.
Looking forward to reading about your exploits during this new gardening year 2018.

Hi Balc! Thank you ☺️
It is a beaut....those two flowers are fading now, but a second stem is nearly as tall. I'll be looking at all your gorgeous ones, I would like to be able to keep it so will definitely reading your blogs..
How are you? Have you been over to Spain recently? I'm hoping to go to Valencia in April...fingers crossed, some sun, can't wait!
19 Jan, 2018
Janey, will you be watching Monty this evening? He starts his programme in the Alhambra (which we visited last Spring) - it’s incredible! A taste of Spain to whet your appetite . . .
19 Jan, 2018
He is Sheila! I've been looking forward to it all week...and you've been....how wonderful, I've always wanted to visit, the Moors were amazing in their architecture and gardens weren't they how they used water always....am watching Costa del Celebrity and they've taken the Renfe train from Valencia to Madrid....
We'll enjoy it, I've missed Mont and GW haven't you?..xx
19 Jan, 2018
Sooo glad you posted that, Sheila, I watch very little TV & I didn't know about Monty Don's programme! ??

If you need any help you know I'm always available to share my experience & knowledge & to encourage people to grow these beautiful flowers! If you can grow Daffodils Amaryllis are just as easy - without the cold though!
I haven't been back to Spain since my mother-in-law died last February - just 2 days before my wife's 65th birthday! It's likely to be some time before we make anther visit though my sister-in-law still lives in the house & we have a son over there who has a 3 year old daughter. We haven't seen her in person since we returned to the UK in March last year. Though thanks to modern tech we have seen many videos of her & we have made an occasional video for her as well.
Hope you have a good time in Valencia & come back "bronzed" from a few days of sunshine!
Cuenca, where my wife is from & where we lived for a great many years, is exactly halfway between Valencia & Madrid! The High Speed train (or AVE, as it's called in Spain) stops in Cuenca.
19 Jan, 2018
Thanks Balc....I will need you to tell me how to look after the bulb after flowering..
I am sorry to hear about your mother in law, it is hard isn't it when families are in different countries, even though we have all this modern technology, it's not the same as picking up your grandchild or holding their hand. I'm the same Balc, with my little one moving from Sydney to Tasmania..
When we lived in Spain, we didn't have time to explore other regions as we were too busy, so this will be a treat..
I remember your photos of Cuenca Balc....enjoy Monty, he's on now..
19 Jan, 2018
Very interesting and beautiful, all the Islamic gardens Sheila and Balc, love Monty..he's another of our national treasures isn't he....
19 Jan, 2018
He certainly is, Janey. It was awe-inspiring to see the places he visited, and I love that Arabic/Moorish(?) calligraphy so much that I got my pens out this morning to make a very rusty attempt!
You're welcome Balcony: second part will be on next Friday.

Hello Janey, great to seeyou back on GoY. Hard to believe you've been absent for a year!
I love that Amaryllis ... not something I have ever grown so it's good to see your photo.
Happy new year to you ... hopefully with some great gardening days ahead ... :o)
20 Jan, 2018
Thanks Janey for your kind words......looking forward to seeing your pond.....
20 Jan, 2018
He's very inspiring isn't he Sheila....how's your Arabic..lol?? And watching the tiles being made...skills that have been handed down the centuries, still being used.
Hi Shirley, good to see you! All best wishes to you for a happy gardening year...
Yes Dd, I'm looking forward to the hard work...not sure where to locate it as yet....sun or shade.....ill have to research!
20 Jan, 2018
Yes, Valerian is a must if we want hummingbird moths. I havent seen one for a few years, fingers crossed for 2018.
I had some time off here a while back and on coming back, everyone is so lovely, like you've only been away for a day, great bunch of folk :-)
21 Jan, 2018
Exactly Dawn......a wonderful group of very friendly peeps.
It's like coming back to your family ☺️
I hope you're well and we have a new year...a whole new page to start.... In my garden I have a wildlife pond to plan for and make...only thoughts today though, outside there is sleety snow pouring down...so log burner flaming and pets all asleep...just need to watch Escape to the Country first..ha ha....take care..Xx
21 Jan, 2018
I very much enjoyed Monty & his journeys through Spain & North Africa! ? I'm looking forward to seeing the 2nd part next week!
We also had snow middle of the day here which later turned to light rain. I have just had a look outside since closing the curtains & it appears all the snow has now gone!?
21 Jan, 2018
Yes me too Balc....he has such a calming way about him, he's great as a presenter..
The same here, quite a snowfall most of the day....I've been painting for most of it, haven't checked outside, but it's supposed to be warming up isn't it.....just thinking of those down in the West country, flooding again....it must be the most dreadful experience and in January too...
21 Jan, 2018
It has begun warming up & today we reached all of 10C! Tomorrow we may reach at least 12C! But lots more rain forecast as well!
It's terrible when there's flooding as there is no way you can get away from it & very little you can do to prevent it either! (Unless you happen to live in a houseboat!)
22 Jan, 2018
Hi Janey! What a beautiful gift. I used to have a RED one... I shout because it did! I'm so envious of you all posting pics of winter bloomers and galanthus and amaryllis! sigh... save some spring for me! xx
23 Jan, 2018
We love our log burners don't we, really lift the spirits when it's do drab outside. Yes, so looking forward to gardening. Your pond is going to be great, do exciting.
24 Jan, 2018
You are quite right, Janey, the red ones do seem to SHOUT at you! ?
Only today I was looking at some photos I have of the greenhouse on Gerry's allotment - from 2010! There were several pots full of bulbs in flower then amongst them were several red one & they really stood out!
I don't have any at the present moment but shortly I should have dozens of bulbs flowering & there will be many reds amongst them!
24 Jan, 2018
Hi Lori! I'm waiting for the second bud to open...they shoot up so quickly it's amazing. The reds are gorgeous, especially for monochrome winter days. Saving you some spring...when it comes....Lori...:))
Yes we do Dawn, even with all the dust, bits and emptying that's necessary...they're worth it. Have to decide yet where to site the pond....sun or shade, no half measures in my garden..
You will soon have a very noisy apartment Balc...bulbs shouting....I hope you'll be shouting back...:))
