Boston Ivy

Janey

Boston Ivy

This Boston Ivy is on the north facing wall and is beginning to colour up now. I love this bright yellow hue. It must be 6 weeks later than my other one which has been and gone and is now in its winter mode...

I went past a house yesterday with bi-coloured holly on one side of the front door and eleagnus ebbingi on the other. Common plants, but they looked cheerful in the winter sunshine. We often look for unusual plants for our gardens, but the old reliables definitely should be respected! Great colour mix there, Janey.

Lovely mix of climbing shrubs there Janey and lots of berries for the birds to eat too.

I love the colour of Boston Ivy! I see you have lots of berries there on your pyrantha.
I hardly ever see any on my long hedge.

Such a wonderful looking Boston ivy, Janey. I just wish mine would flourish…may have to move it elsewhere and keep fingers crossed.

Sorry I'm late getting back to reply, thank you for all the lovely comments.

Paul, it's a different type of ivy, not evergreen, which gives me the chance early spring to pull down all the climbing stems, really easy to do, then.off it goes once again!

Ange, I bet that looked very pretty for winter.
Yes, there's reasons why the usual winter
garden staples are popular, like the Boston Ivy, should fabulous colours! It's starting to turn orange/ purple now, before the leaves drop and that will be a mammoth sweep up job!

Thank you Linda and Wildrose..

Those berries are now being munched by the blackbirds Rose, they must be soft by now.
Do you clip your hedge as the flowers are forming?

I wonder why it doesn't Kate, they're not supposed to be fussy on soil or position?

Lovely to see the autumn colours on this Ivy, Janey!

I did a search for this Ivy & found some pictures of it coving complete houses - even the entire roof! Also other pictures showed it climbing up at least four storied houses & flats! A very vigorous Ivy!

Thank Balc, yes you're right they can.grow so tall in a season. I pull this one down before the leaves emerge in spring, prune it to about 3 feet, then.off it flies again. If I didn't, it would be over the barn roof and down into the pub next door!
