I love these two.

These pretty collard doves visited the garden just after I'd put out wild bird food and for the ground feeders. I ve a feeling when back was turned the wood pigeon hoovered it all up!
Ive taken the hint and fed the doves this time..☺️

Lovely photo of these sweet birds. I always think they have a very sad expression to them.

I think they look very calm Shirley. I'm sure one of them visited the garden regularly a few years ago as she or he doesn't mind me near. I still call her Sweetie haha..

Lovely photo and lovely story Janey 🙂. Can’t believe you have sunshine while we have grey skies and a fearsome frost! -4 in the greenhouse last night.

The last few days here have been sunny and bright, but with the thickest frost everywhere. I can imagine Sheila, it's been -3 here. At least it's killing off all the bugs, so we should start with a nice clean spring when it's time..

They are so pretty aren't they Janey.

I love that you still call one of them 'Sweetie'! I have been keeping the water thawed for the birds and even saw a Great Tit drinking from the bowl on the grass earlier. Surprising, as they rarely stop long enough to eat from the feeders, let alone stay on the ground. Times are tough for the wildlife ... :o(

They really are Rose and so gentle too..🥰

Haha Sheila, one of them could be Sweetie's offspring, if not her..I like to think that..😏 it has been hard for them all hasn't it, lovely you saw the Great Tit, they will have been desperate for water won't they?
Temps here have raised a little, it's 1° now..🥴

Of all the species of Doves & Pigeons I think this is my favourite, Janey! We see them very often around here & their call is unmistakable & can be heard for many months of the year!

Janey, I don't want to boast, but we had 5 degrees today, mind you it still didn't see off the frost in some parts of my garden.

Lovely pair. We have had a little Wren in the garden. I saw it on Jan 1st. Was so thrilled!

We also had 5C today! Only a little sun but lots of clouds. Tomorrow is forecast to be a better day in every way!

Sorry for the late replies.
Balc, they are so gentle aren't they and nicely marked with their black collars. Yes you know when they're around, coo cooking, lovely birds..☺️

That's exciting Karen, don't they have a really loud chatter! There's one that lives right down the garden here and I spring I can sometimes see it and definitely hear it!

It's been the same here Shirley and Balc, then today the thickest frost again BUT we are in the third week of January...yay! The crocus are already poking through..😁

Janey, I have managed to do some gardening yesterday and this morning, chilly but no wind blowing. I am removing many Sedums, along with a huge Carex grass, and plan to plant pollinators in their place. My 'Wish-list' grows longer ... :o)

Yes! Very loud. They are great singers!

Wow you've done well Shirley, too cold here yet. Sounds like a very good idea, and these plans we make right now get us through the winter days. Are you enjoying your new garden book?
My son Jim sent me a lovely garden book too. It's all photos of paintings of gardens, very interesting and unusual.

Karen their warning chatter is so loud! In spring when Pops is about, off it'll start, but of course the Wren probably has nestlings, Pops is too old now to bother..:)

Janey, I am reading Carol Klein, 'Hortobiography' at the moment, very surprising reading of her younger days! I shall say no more.

I keep referring to Rachel de Thame, 'A flower garden for pollinators' as it has so much information on the insects, not just Bees, and the plants they are attracted to.

Your book from Jim sounds wonderful.

Shirley, now I wonder what you can mean..🫢
Rachel de Thame's book sounds really useful for your new plans in your garden. She's a great gardener isn't she. Lots of advice on colours too I bet Shirley.
Jim's sent me quite a few gardening or garden related books over the years. Australian gardens through to Garden Photographer of the year. I love reading them! ☺️

I’ve got Rachel de Thame’s book on my Kindle and have been making lists. I was given Anne Treneman’s Hortocurious, interesting, but it’s not sending me to the garden centre!

Janey, I couldn't possibly say on here! :o))

Sheila, I do think Rachel, along with the fabulous illustrations by her daughter, has written a lovely book.

22 Jan, 2025

Haha, Shirley! I've some Shirley poppy seeds to grow later..:)

Sheila, lots to peruse for the spring .🌼
I've made a list of annuals I'm going to hopefully grow in spring too..:)

23 Jan, 2025

Yes Janey, it’s definitely the time of year for lists! 🙂

Lovely to see your doves Janey. We have a pair that have started to visit us. They are so cute together. I hope that all the birds have kept safe with the awful winds we've had.
It's the garden birdwatch this weekend, so we'll be looking out into the garden and marking down what we see. Hope you didn't have any damage during the storm. Gerry banged a stake into the ground as a support for part of our fence.....got to get 2 new fence posts....
