Gg ~ great design.

Look forward to seeing it 'dressed'.

Yes me too Gg, have you already got your herbs to plant or are you making your mind up which ones to have? will they be plants or are you sowing seeds?

Janey, I purchased a few plants but can't find all I want to include, so I suspect it will be a mixture of plants and seeds. Any suggestions? No, I won't be planting dandelions!! lol.

He...he.....oregano is easy to grow from seed Gg, and the golden form is beautiful, great for stir fries...pizzas etc. Purple Sage will self seed once started and is gorgeous with the pale lavender flowers, chives, basil, nasturtium for the peppery flowers, and a sprinkling of tagetes round the circumference or calendula will keep the white and greenflies at bay. Parsley will keep coming up once sown too..........:o) Now you can tell me to mind my own business while you put in what you want......LOL!

I like all of Janey's suggestions, with the one exception. If you plan to use sage in cooking, purple sage has very little flavor. It grows well and is beautiful but no flavor. I yanked it all out last year and put in reg old culinary sage.

Did you Wohlibulli....now where would you get the culinary Sage....I must try it, I must look for packets of seeds at the Garden Centre.....:o)

Nice idea, GG, like the design.

Thanks all. Janey, You and I are of like mind on several of your suggestions with a few more added I had not thought of. I also thought of going with tagetes around the circumference for looks as well as keeping certain insects at bay. I love using fresh herbs in cooking so I'm looking forward to the fruits of my labor. I welcome all input.

Nice idea, it'll be great when it's filled in :)

I'm a big savory fan and summer savory gets tall with dark buds and lavender flowers and may reseed, winter savory stays year round but smaller. Thyme will fill in any blanks self seeding and carpet with pink flowers. Others I like are very tall. Bergarrten sage is culinary and has big round leaves that dry wonderfully.

I'm not sure what was funny about what I said Janey. I actually got both sages at a specialty nursery called Thyme after Thyme. There are many varieties of sage that are called culinary, any would work.

I'll have a look at the herbs in the garden centre nearby..........I was smiling at you Wohli...not laughing! Looked at my herb plants yesterday and they look very worse for wear. Think I may lookk for some Dill and Fennel...love the feathery leaves and height.......Gt has good ideas Gg, the Savoury sounds beautiful!

Do you use Savory in any particular dishes? I've never tried it. Sounds interesting tho.

11 Apr, 2009

lol...I use it too much! I put it into a lot of bean dishes, its really nice with legumes and red meats. It has a little heat and slight peppery flavor. Nice in a brown gravy or lentil soup.I've chosen it over marjoram, seem similar to me. Even fresh clipped into a veggie salad. Real nice with tomatoes. I use it too much....lol.

Mmmmm.......sounds a great addition Gt, looked at bronze fennel yesterday Gg...would grow high but a very attractive herb.

Thanks GT, I have Marjoram in the little herb garden out front and it is great in potatoes, I have seen Savory plants at the nursery, will have to give it a try. I have a open space, as my Tarragon didn't make it thru this winter.

Dill and fennel are feathery although they grow tall, but would suit putting them in the middle and then gradually reduce the height of the herbs until you have the ground hugging ones in the front all the way round. Or were you going to grow each herb in each section. Just a thought.

Thanks all for your contributions. All of these suggestions sound so good I may have to make my herb garden a bit larger!!
