Spotted this fella sitting on the neighbours fence this morning. I dont think he could decide which way to jump as there is a pond on either side of that fence........decisions...decisions........

He's beautiful. Last year I braved going up to one of our local church towers to look down on the heronry below. It was great but I don't cope with enclosed spaces very well and hated going up the narrow spiral staircase!

A great picture Milky, you did well to capture it, all I seem to get is a view of one taking off or flying overhead, perhaps I should get a pond!

We have herons flying low over the top of us here as we are on the hilltop. ALthough herons are a bit sneaky about eating from ponds I still like them. We used to have a pond down the road where we lived before and had to net it over because the heron took some of our fish.

I like them Lindak, and when they fly they are so graceful.....and if they pinch some fish, well, they are only doing what comes naturally..............
3 May, 2009
We should learn to live with nature......we are all on the planet together Milky.

I agree Lindak...........

Lost over 100 fish in a little over a month to one (or several) of these pesky critters - in a pond that I had always thought was 'heron proof'. The pond now has ONE fish and the ducks and ducklings (currently 13) that have taken it over the last 2 years have decimated the many lilies. Fabulous photo......but it does make me grit my teeth a bit!

where is my shot-gun
5 May, 2009
i am the same.
want to say to you all fish keepers like me GET A £25 PLASTIC HERON and move it about the pond daily and you will not loose another fish.
got this from a guy who had a pond 7ft deep and 25,000 gallons and koi as long as your arm
herons are solitary feeders and will not feed with another heron present.

With you totally Dave.......but the fake heron is a bit of a sore point in my family unfortunately....I was so incensed at the loss 20 or so fish (which by the way are not in my pond but my mothers - and till recently I tended her garden for her and therefore felt very territorial about the fish) that I purchased ye olde worlde plasticky heron which to my mind looked pretty sharp. If I'd been a heron, I wouldn't have messed with it anyway............but other members of my family thought it looked naff!!!! So we lost all the rest of the fish........'nuff said!

This is a Beautiful photo of this beautiful Chappie. I have never seen a Heron
in my Garden.............You are so lucky to get a glimpse of one.
But not so lucky for our poor Fish, I have lost a pondful of Koi, in one go.
Still, restocked and now keep net on all year round!
