My Very First Daffodil!!!!!!

I planted the bulbs in May or early June. There were 8 of them, 4 irises and 4 daffodils. I planted them in a alternating pattern, but after being disrupted by Frances who was trying to ‘plant a bone’… LOL… the pattern went west! Amazingly though, all 8 bulbs survived and came up. My very first daffodil opened on Monday/Tuesday – out comes the camera!
Daffodil Close Ups….
Try as I might I just could not do the flower justice!
Leafy greens beneath the flower :o)
Here are some of our other plants
Sweet Allysum
Miniature Schefflera
Maidenhair fern, looking much better than last year…
Our much bigger Schefflera
Finally a pic of this great plaque we received from my aunt and uncle in QLD one Christmas:

Thank you for your kind comments Cate! I just love how special sound or sights or places can conjure up special memories. Good luck with your garden!

Your photos of the daffodils are very good Pip. Seems strange seeing daffodils at this time of year for us, but refreshing.

lovely Daffs Pip-- the closeup looking straight on is my favorite with a bit of luck the'll begin to increase for you, can you grow any of the other spring flowers that Cate mentioned?

How confused was I when I read the title, as it's July, wasn't expecting to see Spring bulbs ! Well done for growing them, lovely photos.

Well done if these are your first, Daffs were some of the first bulbs I planted with my dad. Its a joy to see such beauty from a dried up bulb.
Just one thing to remember when they've finished flowering if you want them again next year - remember to feed them and leave the leaves to die natually. Also it is recommended that they need watering until the leaves die

Pamg, thanks for your nice comment, I've never seen bluebells etc in Australia - but I have never tried. I don't know where I would get them from but I may have a go next year, you've inspired me ;o)))
Cheers Littleoldman for that advice! Much needed as i have never done the spring bulb thing before much :o)
Thanks Cinders, Shirley, Carol, Holly and Elsiemay for your kind comments. I can imagine the whole seasons thing causes some confusion at GoY but I can't wait to come in on a 45 C day this Aussie summer and see refreshing pics of snow, frost, icicles etc!

I think the daffy pics are great and love maiden hair fern although I have given up planting it cos it shrivels or dies too easily!!

Lovely pics and blog Pip. The daffodil is gorgeous. They're my favourite flowers. I'm a bit like Cate, they hold memories from my childhood too, along with bluebells and wild primroses. I agree with Littleoldman. Don't cut the leaves, until they're dead, or you will lose next years flowers. Your bulbs should give you more flowers next year. I had 1 bulb planted outside my front door which gave me 2/3 flowers, a few years ago. Same bulb is in the same place, and now I get a lovely display of about 15 flowerheads. Where did you get your bulbs from? maybe they could get you some bluebell bulbs. Would be worth seeing what time of year they would flower for you. :o)))

Thanks Sandra, Flori and Fluff :o)
Dont keep your maidenhairs in draughts Lulu, I think is the golden rule, and the silver rule is don't touch them! They are too delicate for my taste really, although they are very pretty, ours die with great regularity... I would love to hear from someone who has success in growing them!!!
Thanks for your kind comment Linda, I got my bulbs from the local nursery at $1.25 a pop. They usually have a selection of loose bulbs so you can fill your own paper bag. I have never seen bluebells there.

You should ask next time you go there. They obviously import them. Maybe no-one has asked for them before, so they wouldn't feel the need to stock them. It's worth a try. :o)))

Agreed :o)

wonder if any of the specialist internet sites would sell to you... it could be a whole new market for them, but beware you get english bluebells not the spanish imposters

Have no idea Pam... but I'm not that crazy... certainly don't want to pay postage or whatever on bulbs. Let's try the garden centre first eh?

i know just what you mean by not being able to do it justice Pip - mind you your photos come close - but a photo can never capture the 'whole' - the glow or the smell or the way it moves - i share your joy in daffodils - when i was a child in the UK we used to walk every day and seeing the first daffodil in the woods was a big event - daffodils, bluebells, snow drops, primroses - we used to keep a sharp lookout for them all in turn - thank you for conjuring these lovely memories =))
