Canna

Canna (Canna indica)

I can't believe that this plant survived the winter with no protection - it's in a pot and I left it outside the greenhouse.

Incredible! The fact it was in a pot makes me think it's winter wet kills them rather than cold.....I love Cannas but they never flower here much before the first frosts so it's not really worth the effort. :(

It's actually more attractive before it flowers. The flower is orange and not particularly big or beautiful - just 'striking' really.

You could well be right about the wet/cold.

Actually, now that I think about it, it is the foliage that is attractive ...very jungly. The flowers, as you say, can sometimes be a bit of a let down, although en masse they are very bright.

Shame the pot is too big to pop into a space in the hot border - the Canna would look fabulous in there!

Indeed it would!

i just love canas..this one has great markings as you say Milky. Karensusan i just cut the ones in pots down in the winter and put them in the shed to dry out for the winter. in the spring they look dead but they soon start to shoot.

I still think it's amazing that this one survived outdoors.....

I had several different sorts of Canna in the other garden but no space for much in this one. I used to cut them down and place in a greenhouse and let them go almost dry but every year they came again but I had to divide them every few years as one of them broke the pot with it's roots. The foliage is lovely and jungly.

I suppose I should try to move the pot into the greenhouse this autumn. It is indeed a lovely colour. :-)
