Hodgeheg

I found a hedgehog wandering around the garden last night (I used to call them hodgehegs when I was a kid!). I was crouched down taking pictures of him walking towards me and he walked straight into me. Could he be blind? He carried on mooching around the grass sniffing all the time and then I noticed he has only got one back leg.It must have happened a while ago as there is no sign of injury. He’s obviously been in some kind of scrape but seemed healthy enough. Could he be the reason I’ve not had many slugs this year? Anyway I hope he sticks around a while and survives a bit longer.

Good job you don't use slug pellets. I don't think there are any hedgehogs left around here. I haven't seen one for years.

my daughter seen one few weeks back across the rd from our house, she managed to get a photo of it too, but they do seem to be a rarity now

We used to see them quite often at my parents house but haven't seen one for years now. Obviously not camera shy!

You really are lucky! I believe they thrive on cat food as well as slugs, don't they? I wish we had one to eat the ******* snails - my poor Clematis 'Mrs Cholmondely' has been chomped yet AGAIN. I actually found a snail climbing up her cane today!!!! I am hatching a cunning plan to protect the bottom growth of the two Clematis waiting to be planted.... By the way, we always call them 'Hig-hogs' in our family because that was what our little boy (now 6' 3") called them when he was 3'6"!

we must be lucky because we have loads of hedgehogs , ,sometimes I have to rescue baby ones and try to feed them , a lot of them don,t survive especiallyif they have got very wet , we have a hog house in the garden , if I see a little one that looks a bit lost I push it in the hoghouse and hope it likes it and stays ,

Such a coincidence, as just before I went up to bed last night I noticed Birtie staring intently out the patio window so I went to look and, sure enough, there was a plump little hodgeheg (yes - I call them that too!) trundling about on the lawn! BTW, Bonkers is right, their eyesight is not v good. Lovelly little fellas :-)

Same here. Though since my pond is only about 2.5ft x 2ft, I think I would have noticed! :-)
