Gardening friends are the best

A little while ago, when I still had my flower shop a lady called Maureen used to come in quite regularly. She didn’t always buy something, but she was always ready to have a laugh and a chat.
Since I closed my shop, I continued to visit her usually once a week and we have become really good friends. In fact she jokes she is my adopted ‘Mum’.
One of the things we most have in common is a shared interest and enjoyment in gardening. We have done all manor of swaps and cuttings for each other and shared lots of happy times inspecting each others gardens.
She has a lovely garden full of flowers but one thing I couldn’t understand was why she didn’t sit out in it. Whenever she made a cup of tea, I would hotfoot it out in the garden but she had nowhere to sit. Only a old rickety bench that could not be trusted to take the weight of a sparrow let alone us! So in passing I asked her where she sat when she wanted to enjoy the garden. Wouldn’t a little arbour look lovely in front of the shed? I ventured……
Two weeks later she had decided and we put one on order via the internet. A bit of a wait later and this is what arrived.

Now if I can just get these screws in!

China is supervising from a distance

and at last it has all come together! Yippeee

and here she is, in the finished product. Now where’s that cup of tea???

If you were wondering what that thing behind her head is – its her little wreath. She bought it when we went to the Kent Show

and little ‘Polly’ scarecrow is just around the corner in the greenhouse.

I just hope we get some nice weather, so we can have a few cream teas next year.

I think she's very pleased Libet. She keeps inviting people around and she's now asked me to print some photos for her so she can send to her friends a bit further away. Bless her!!

Lovely - agree gardening friends are great - we're full of creative ideas :))) Love the bench and the colour reminds me of the seaside - strange as it may sound. Nice you kept in touch with her. Love the scarecrow - it is sweet too with its pigtails :D

Yes Hywel and Paul
It really adds to the enjoyment. It also saves my non gardening friends from being bored to death, with my gardening chat...I can save it for Maureen and Goyers!

I spoke to her on the phone today Ml. She said she spent all yesterday afternoon sitting out in the garden doing her knitting!! Really unusual for her.
Thanks everyone for your kind comments. I think she will get a lot of pleasure from it.

Thanks Clarice, glad you enjoyed it. All she needs now is some cushions. Oh well, I will add that to my list of things to do!

That was such a generous gesture, Poppy, and what a lovely friendship. My Mum always told me that "to have a friend, you have to BE a friend" . . . good advice!
