Poppys Paradise

I planted loads of poppies last year, they are just now coming into flower. I know they are a bit of a 1 week wonder but I just cant help loving them. There are loads more coming into flower, with great fat buds full of promise. I planted some in slightly more shady positions so that the timing would be a bit later – well that was the plan, we will have to see if it actually works out that way.
Theres loads of buds just waiting to burst open too
While I think of it, there’s a few other things looking good in the garden at the moment.
These aquilegias are long awaited, grown from seed early last spring and are now flowering in a fairly shady position. Bit tall but quite pretty dont you think?
The real stars at the moment have to be the alliums!
This is the bit around the pond
I just love the colour and the texture of the new leaves emerging from the rogersia.
I like it especially with this euphoribia robbiaie
This is a newer area of the garden, this was cleared and planted in April this year. Willi can you see your camellia in the background?
You can hardly see it in this photo but the honeysuckle filled the whole garden with wonderful scent after all that rain yesterday afternoon. If you look closely you will see the Malvern stuff planted here – Tiarella, hosta, clematis, there’s also a fern on the left.
One of the main pleasures for me in the garden is scent. Strangely enough I have not grown wallflowers in the past. I only bought a few bareroot stems from the GC last year. They have been so good, long lasting and smelly that I will definately be growing them next year. The seedlings are in the greenhouse growing away nicely.
They’re alas a bit past their best now.
A few other bits being grown on in the greenhouse -
and a few more outside
Cant wait for the rest of those poppies to come out – Pattys Plumb is looking particularly fat!

Thanks ST, its beginning to look the way I want it. The poppies that are out are in the front garden - its much more sunny there. Patty is in the back and still in tight bud. Suzy, I got all my alliums from Wilkinsons in a bargain pack 20 for £5. I paid a small fortune for some allium giganteums and one out of 6 flowered last year and have not been seen since! Christophii is the size of a football and flowers for ages.

I didn't know we had a Wilkinsons around here, never been to one, but as I keep hearing about them on GOY I googled it and there is one not too far away, I might have to investigate at some point!

Hi Sewingkiller, glad your poppies are doing well too, thanks for the compliment about the garden. Suzy, give Wilkinsons a try. Ive bought all sorts of bulbs in there and had lots of nice stuff. Im not so keen on their plants. I got a heuchera with added bonus of vine weevils one time! Sheilar you just reminded me I have some lovely orange welsh poppies theyre fab at the moment love em.
Diane no Ive not noticed that, but now you say that I dont seem to have butterflies. Do you know why? Im growing lots of single flowers this year to attract them. I did think of you when I mentioned the rodgersia Paul. Its very like gunnera which I know you love.

Great blog Poppy. You have a lovely garden, and I like the box of herbs too.

You have some lovely plants there. I like Alliums too and Rodgersia, your pond edgers are super too.

All looking lovely - had my first poppy bloom this week too! Those seedlings must be keeping you busy :)
For oriental poppies if you cut back the foliage after flowering (by which time it is scruffy anyway) you get a chance of more flowers later in the year. Not as many as first time round but it means you can enjoy them twice :)
I can't find anything on the internet re poppies and butterflies - most sites say that they attract bees and butterflies. I don't get many butterflies and do hope this isn't true.

Love your blue box! Down on our valley road there have been roadworks going on for years, causing loads of earth upheavel and the wild red poppies are loving it! They are even better this year - I must get down there with my camera!

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments. Thanks for the tip on cutting them back Scottish, I will definately try that. I hope its not true about the butterflies too. Willi you can come for lunch if that's what youre hinting at! Ive just had a quick look around the garden and even more poppies have opened this morning. Ill put a few more pics on.

Did anyone see that programme on TV last night - I think it was called Junk or treasure. It followed a couple of reclamation yards based in Cheshire and I think the other one was Lancs. They bought up treasures from old farm buildings including some beautiful stone troughs. Goyers who live near those are soooooo lucky! Cinders you should put on a blog about the place you got your lovely rocks.

Its an hours ride away though Poppy, and nothing like that there, it was mostly gravel, sand and dumped concrete pieces, and there was a machine there crunching all that up for use in new roads etc. Not a very interesting reclamation place like those you are talking about. Unfortunately.

Oh that's a shame Cinders, nevermind we can still watch the program and dream cant we?

The good news is Ive just spotted a lovely butterfly on the alliums - just feet away from the poppies. Posting new blog in a mo - oooh excited!

Cool! :)))

Could be Opium - it was years ago I knew it. Used to go round my other allotment field picking off the Wild Poppy flowers. We had lots of Skippers, Brimstones,
Red Admirals, Peacocks etc.
The 60% reduction in the Butterfly population is worrying. Hope they recover.

it all looks really good, i love poppies, but apart from the little welsh ones none are out yet.
that treasure box of herbs is a lovely idea.
i have wallflowers by the front door they have been well worth their price for the scent alone and they are still going strong
