POND LIFE - any ideas?

WALES, United Kingdom

Had some plants arrive yesterday for the pond and after popping them in, seem to have a load of these little critters swimming round.

Anyone got any idea what they may be?

Wierd looking things!!

They look very much like mosquito larvae to me. They seem to need to breathe by putting their end parts up to the water surface, then if disturbed go hurtling back down to the deeper areas of water. If you have any fish they will eat them.

we didnt put any fish in our pond, we filled a bucket from our local river and added that so there may have been something in that water or something attached to the pond plants we had

we now have 2 or 3 fish in
couldnt tell you wha they are though

hehehe

Lol! I'm guessing these critters aren't harmful as they came attached to the plants!

Your secret is safe, no fear!

....and if the fish are happy, well....where's the harm? Saved from a life of nets and fishing lines.

LOL!!

they are mosquito lava and breath through there rear end.as for not harmfull depends wear you live at best they bight only the females that is to bring there babies up males dont drink bload.in africa it would be a far worse gproblem..if you want to lose them cause there bighting you get some stickle backs from a local pond they love them and they are very beautifull in there breeding colours .like humans only males are are good looking lol

Lol! Interesting stuff NP.

So would you say I'll be okay to leave them be? Will they leave the roost when grown?

Or am I best to try and get rid of them do you think? Only got the pond to attract frogs and other wildlife. No fish involved.

they will hatch and lay more in any still water even in old tires .if there not bighting you dont worry if they are get some little sticklebacks as you cant use poisan or make it moving water as they wont lay in that.

That's brilliant NP. Much appreciated.

Probably leave them for now then if they gonna be okay. I assume their bites are harmless if they're in this country?

And I totally agree with the comment about males being the good looking ones!!
