Hi Motinot - yes, now is the right time to take root cuttings. As to indoors - have you got a coldframe or a cool greenhouse? I think it might be too warm indoors.

I have a sunroom, some heat in there on cold nights, a cold-frame and a wooden shed, unheated.....thanks Spritz....:>)

When I used to ggrow these flamboyant flowers I found that trying to get rid of it was almost impossible as the tiny bits of root remaining in the soil kept on growing. If you just pot-up some bits of root and overwinter in a frame or sheltered spot they should grow.

Thanks Heron...

I agree with Heron, chop around the clump with a spade as if you were going to dig it up, then wait for all the little plantlets to grow, then move them to their final place.

Hi Guys, just muscling in on Motinot's question here .... I collected the seeds from my oriental poppy this year and set them a month ago and I think every seed must have geminated! May seem a silly question but will the seeds produce oriental poppies or will they revert back to ordinary ones.

I know they tend to flop and leave a gap after flowering but........they really make a statement, look at me, am I not fantastic !! When I had bigger beds I planted them with Delphiniums, now I have smaller more manageable beds, sadly.

I even like the leaves Heron, don't you :-)

They may revert back to the basic red Oriental poppy...or you may get something wonderful like Patty's Plum. This was put on the compost heap until 'Patty' rescued it! But they will still be Oriental Poppies.

Thank you Volunteer. You've put my mind at rest. My orientals are pink.
I was surprised they germinated so well as the plants arent cheap to buy, that's why I was curious.

I've often wondered how the GC's justify the price of plants that grow like weeds.

Because people don't know, Heron!

I am for ever splitting/digging these up and moving around the garden. I often take root cuttings of the nicer slightly different ones.
Then try and swap them for other different ones.
