We have lots of columbines in pots. Do they need to be bought indoors in the cold months?

No they are hardy and fully herbaceous however, as you have them in pots, you may need to protect if there is heavy or prolonged frost so that the pot and soil don't freeze.

The proper name for your plant is Aquilegia and it is a hardy perennial - tough as old boots infact.
They'll deal with minus temps with no trouble at all but in pots ..... ?

As Moongrower says in pots they're likely to die in the cold because their roots are all above the ground and not nicely tucked-up for winter like they would be if you planted them out.
They prefer to be in the ground so do the plants a favour and plant some out - they self seed readily so you'll increase stocks constantly.

They will seed everywhere anyway. :)
