Plant watching

I think many of us watch a developing bud and marvel in the final fully opened flower. But do we really take much notice?

I grow Centaurea macrocephala as it is a good mid/back of the border plant, with a good sunny yellow flower. But have you looked closely? The bud is very textured.

The first sight of emerging petals. One of my girls described it as its punk phase.

Almost a mohawk as the petals continue to open.

Fully open and glorious in the sunshine.

They are very rich in nectar and pollen so they are magnets to all sorts of insects.

They don’t die very gracefully though.

Checking the photos there was 8 days from bud to over, probably due to the heat.

Are there any flowers you watch carefully?

Great blog, Eileen! Love the progression of the bud opening…the initial phase of the closed bud - definitely agree, the detail is amazing.
Great description throughout!

Amazing detail, I might do this with my kniphofia, once the flower starts to poke out at the bottom I noticed they grow very fast, and maybe Echinacea too , I will be having a look :-)

Thanks for the lovely comments. I do think looking closely adds an extra something. There are several other plants I am watching with interest so I may end up doing another mini blog.

My Spotty Dotty flowering is always fascinating to watch, especially now I've got macro on my mob camera.

I've been starring at my hydrangea for the past 2 weeks wondering if its ever going to bloom. I've never seen a plant like this. Thanks for the presentation.

Interesting to see the flower opening and it has an interesting bud too. I missed this blog - it must have been in one of my breaks from technology. Thanks for directing me to it :)
