Wonderful news for the SOS Committee trying to save Suntrap Garden. It seemed as if they would fail to secure backing to keep this gem of a garden which was donated to the people of Scotland and the Lothians by George Boyd Anderson. He brought his dream of a low carbon footprint to life in the house and garden he placed on a three acre site on the outskirts of Edinburgh. On 1st March 2012 Historic Scotland granted his family home Millbuies, the Dovecot and the Compost area Grade B status.
you can read about it on their new website
http://www.suntrapgarden.org/
The Gardening Club of which I am a member are hopeful that we will be able to continue to meet at the garden.
If you live within travelling distance of Suntrap the Gardening Club are actively recruiting new members. Read more about them on
http://sos2010.btck.co.uk/
This was the old website for the SOS committee which the Gardening club are now using to promote both Suntrap and the Club.

That Beetle makes quite a statement. Our young friend in the Home page Pic on the Gardening club website is the son of one of the GOY members.

Thanks Bb. It was a horrible blow when the college decided to pull out. It was especially hard on those who used it as an educational facility. Hopefully, even in these hard times there will be enough support to get it back doing what it did best. It provides a tranquil setting and healing ambience that is hard to find in this world of ours for many people. I am very pleased that George Boyd Andersons forethought is still having an influence, through the research he did, to provide a comfortable home with a very low carbon footprint. He was way ahead of his time in seeing that there would come a time when we would need to harness the elements around us instead of using up the worlds resources for the benefit of a few. I hope the National Trust will back track on its dimissal of the garden and see this as an opportunity to save a home and garden for the nation. I believe the college own title to the portion on which Millbuies stands and they had hoped to realise a large amount of money from its sale but hopefully they too will realise that this is part of our heritage and should be saved.

Just been reading up on it, would have been a shame to lose it after all the late gentlemans work and his generosity, some things are worth saving for future generations to both learn from and also enjoy...

Thank you Linclass. He was a very generous benefactor. He gave money to help establish a ski slope in the Pentlands south of Edinburgh. That was in jeopardy but looks to have been saved after a vigorous campaign to save it. Our National Skiing team will have their HQ there. He also gave a wonderful country park in Morayshire to the residents for their enjoyment and he donated the Ben More Outdoor Centre where thousands of school children from cities have learned to appreciate the wide open spaces.

That is really good news for you all, Scotsgran. I hope your club gets the chance to continue to enjoy it.
Just had a look at the websites and the garden looks like a special place and certainly worth holding on to.
P.S. Nice to see my old yellow Beetle put to such good use.
