Was it worth the drive?

When I joined the site I was made very welcome by many GoYers and over the years I have swapped plants with many of you. A regular contributor has been Spritzhenry and I have been invited down many times over the years.
Well the time finally presented itself where I could leave youngest child [Victoria] in charge of OH. She agreed she’d cook etc despite having glandular fever. The drive down was lovely and I did see my eldest girl for lunch.
Thursday morning dawned bright and sunny and I headed off. What a glorious garden. No wonder Spritz is so knowledgeable, she grows such a range of plants from the common garden worthy plants to the rare.
This one part of her border opposite the new wall. I had to get Henry in too :o)
We had coffee in the arbour seat. The planting even has a Clematis vitacelli that was known at the time the house was built in the mid 18th Century.
Below this top border there are some amazing phlox carrying on the blue/purple/pink colour scheme. So many plants and I know I am not doing them justice.
This photo is just one of so many examples of what Spritz does well, planting combinations. The Lychnis coronaria ‘Gardeners world’ is used as a punctuation mark throughout the border.
This is a view with the wall behind us.
For some reason I stopped taking photos at this point. I cant say why other than there was so much to see.
When you consider the water that poured through the garden and house last autumn [Look back at Spritz’s blog to see what she faced] I was amazed at how everything looks.
I was treated to a wonderful day and I cant thank Peter and Barbara enough for their hospitality.
The drive home was horrendous but was the drive worth it? Yep you bet.

the journey was awful, M5 & M1 had lots of small shunts that slowed traffic down as well as some bigger more serious ones. People are so impatient and take such risks. Should have been 5hrs but it was nearer 71/2.
Spritz is such a lovely lady and so is her OH.

It is a magical setting and the garden is truly special. I too love that wall.
I am sorry the journey was not a pleasant one but I am sure you have some wonderful memories of such a lovely day out.

Its like a miracle after the horrid floods. Good that you had such a good day in spite of the journey home. Thankyou for the lovely photos.

I know what you mean about the photos SBG, I did exactly the same. You are drawn from one plant to another and you are so busy looking, you dont have time to take many pictures (and anyway Spritz's are better than mine). The Wall, now what can you say..it's mindblowingly stunning! So are the plants..and yes it seems impossible that only months ago it was mostly under water.

Thanks so much Seaburn......I almost cried when her heartbreaking
news came onto goy, the stress and strain getting the house and garden repaired would have daunted many of us I,m sure.
But the glorious photographs, and maybe more the ones you didn't take, being overcome by the beauty before you tell their own tale.....
What a garden....and what a gardener xxx

Wow that is stunning, it must be breathtaking to see first hand! Sorry to hear that Spritzhenry was so badly affected last year but what an incredible recovery - thanks for sharing :)

she really has. The island bed has filled out beautifully too even though I think it is only 3 yrs since she did it.

I'm so jealous Sbg, I think I'll put this on my bucket list. I should think when it was flooded, this sort of display seemed impossible, especially within such a short time. Does nothing daunt our indomitable Spritz?:-))

brilliant SBG! Thanks so much for sharing your visit with us. I'm guessing the reason you stopped taking pics was because you were so busy chatting with Barbara! I would be!
