hellebore heaven or put your purse away dear!

I’ve come late to hellebores but now I appreciate the beauty of them.
On Thursday we had a guest speaker at our local HPS group who used to breed hellebores. Her aim was to improve the vigour and also the shape of the flower to her preferred shape.

We were treated to the back ground of how you select your parent plants, pollinate and collect seeds. The ruthless destruction of non-desirable seedlings and then the results.

As a bonus we were invited to visit her garden today to see the hellebores she has decided are garden worthy. The garden is in the ‘yellow book’ and if you are in the Holderness region visit Brook Farm. There were some wonderful species examples too.

I will show you several of her beauties and mind you don’t go drooling.

We had a wonderful time and her garden has many other treasures including snowdrop and paeonia collections.

On the way home I stopped at the local plant man and did get my purse out. Penny’s pink and an un-named white one.

Not a patch on some of the ones we saw to day but nice strong plants.

They look good Seaburngirl we went to the GC yesterday and I said to my wife why doesn't my hellebore look like there's but when I got home and looked at it all of my flowers are looking down and there's were up. Also mine is quite old so I think after flowering it could be on the compost heap and I'll buy the other variety later in the year, Roy.

Simply gorgeous.
Like yourself, I'm just coming to Hellebores, but they always seem so expensive..after looking at these I'm beginning to see why.

no don't chuck out the old variety Roy. Buy a new one and let the bees do the pollinating for you and wait and see what new ones you get.

If you think about it, it takes 4yrs for a seedling to be big enough to flower so a lot of time to be paid for. Then if its not pretty enough it gets composted.

Those are so beautiful! I really like the un-named white one you bought.

Oh my, some real eye openers there! I love the cream one with the pink edging!
I bought Penny's Pink this year too, but its nowhere near as big as the one in your photo.

I love hellebores, and there are some treasures there, especially those apricot shades.

I'm just beginning to appreciate them too, now that they are a decent size in my garden. I have always looked at them with the 'I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to have you' look but I'm so pleased I showed some restraint!

I love those hellebores, amazing colours too :O)

They are wonderful and she must have thrown hundreds away.
I also like the apricot shades too. I cant remember what she said she'd used to get the apricot colours. She has some lovely reds too.
Its the fact she gets stripes on the back of the tepals as well as spots on the inside.

I have very few of my own :o(.

Sounds like you had a good day SBG. Lovely hellebores, love that unnamed white you've brought home with you.

I planted the Christmas Rose Hellebore in moms garden a few years back. Only thing is the blasted bluebells keep swamping it :-(

Only downside to hellebores is the way the flowers hang their heads. Its a shame most of their beauty is hidden. But then I suppose its a lovely surprise when you get close up.

Wow some lovely ones there, Im warming to them too and aim to get in my woodland as interested to see if they will seed around, I've recently learnt from a neighbour that if you remove the older browning leaves they look so much better.

You are cruel, Sbg! You know I'm addicted to Hellebores. I have to avert my eyes if I go to the GC at the moment, and tell myself I HAVE NO MORE SPACE for any more beauties. :-((

well you are so far away you wont be able to buy Spritz.

You can always find more space.

Nope, not for Hellebores, I even resisted some half price ones yesterday!

They weren't very special ones, but a v.v.v. good bargain for anyone without any. Actually, they were a third of the original price when I think about it!!!!!
