Pond update

The pond is settling well and the plants growing away well. The inline UV light is doing its job as witnessed by the dead algae on the bottom of the liner and clear water.

One curiosity is what has happened to 2 of the lilies? Their leaves are a gorgeous plummy red.

One of the lilies has flowered and I can see new buds forming underneath.

I spotted a shoal of 8: yes 8 fish today. All 3 or 4 years old going by their size. One is starting to pick up its golden colour. None seem to have the large tail fins of the original parents. I have seen 1 year old fish too. The photo isn’t brilliant as I don’t have a polarising filter for this little camera.

Glad to see your pond is now recovering. Keep up the good work Eileen.
We have just had to buy a new quartz tube for the pump in the pond. Rather expensive - £25.00.

You will have seen my water lilies ..both have the same colouring. I love it! Am envious of your clear water.

I can see them! Not sure why your lily leaves are plum coloured, but don't they look nice?

I think the red leaves are normal. Some on ours have them too. L ovely to have all those fish. i really miss having fish but the heron spots them and i don't like the look of nets so we are just waiting and hoping for frogs and at least there will be taddies...

these have never had red leaves before. the 2 others of the same colour in the pond are from the same original plant and they are not this colour at the moment.

Glad to hear your pond is up and running now . Mine do the same then turn green I always thought it was how much Sun they get.

these are very red , the new leaves are usually bronzy then turn green as they reach the surface. these are very different with paler stripes and even on the surface aren't greening up.

Can you tell us how you got clear water? My pond is THICK with algae! I must have missed something---what is an inline UV light please. I'm just about to look for previous blogs about this that I have obviously missed!

The filter system has a UV light in the top. as the water flows through the UV kills algal cells [bacterial cells too], they sink to the bottom or get filtered out when they pass through the filter again.

As for it being clear that is down to it being a freshly filled pond. it will green slightly especially if the light fails. UV lights don't seem to give out much obvious light. but after about 6 weeks it will clear naturally.

if the pond is healthy look for signs of plant food washing into the pond. this happened when I put new pots on the wall around the pond. new pots fresh compost with slow release fertilizer. 5 days later then the water went green.
you can get a chemical to add to the pond to cause the algae to clump together and then it can be scooped out. But the pond water needs checking for ammonia/nitrate levels first.

That's interesting, thanks SBG!

Glad it's doing well now. Strange about the leaves ...

SBG: Would it eradicate duck weed? That's our problem.

sadly no Eirlys.
the best to do there is to draw a thin rope slowly across so you corral the duckweed and then scoop it out. then vigilance to pick out every bit you see. they start as a single leaf then become 2 leaves. after that they go on to reproduce by splitting into 2 etc.
I do allow a small amount to grow as some pond life eats it.
