Inspite of the dreadful weather!

March certainly came in ‘like a lion’ but didn’t go out like a lamb did it?
Apart from a couple of days in the greenhouse and 3 days in the garden we have been confined to indoor activities.
For me that meant quilting. It was our 35th wedding anniversary on Monday and I made a quilt for hubby. It is a double bed size and features a Mariners Compass motif. Hubby enjoys sailing and the green fabric is shades of Jade and 35 yrs is associated with Jade.
He made me these spelted beech bowls for use in the sewing room.
On one of the days we got into the garden we took down most of a dead yew. He has kept the thicker branches to dry and then turn into something. Not sure what yet.
So much rain the last two days that all the drainage dykes/drains in the area are over topping. Even our back garden had standing water on it yesterday.

Congratulations on your 35th wedding anniversary. You are both very talented. That is a gorgeous quilt. I'm sure your OH appreciates all the work that has gone in to it. He has made a wonderful job of those bowls. We had to take down a laburnum tree and our minister carted it off to the local wood work teacher. He made a set of small mushrooms as a thank you to Ivor. The patterns on the turned wood are stunning.

Wow a very talented wife and husband team!
My garden is so wet and going to be topped up again today, very frustrating.

I loved the Compass in the middle. Must have been very intricate to make.
I made one once, all by hand.
'Lily' White Swan.
Was just a cot quilt, that took me ages. River flowing by
at the bottom with reeds floating in, and glass beads for the water dripping off the bottom. It was in the exhibition Kettering Quilters put on at our Art Gallery. Showing the Lilies and the Swans. I remember the binding was quite hard to do, but I was very proud to embroider my name and the date on the back. Its still in the cupboard.

What a talented couple indeed, those are amazing,Sbg..and what a lovely memory of your 35th Wedding Anniversary ..I didn't know it was called Jade..lots of rain here last night, and flood warnings in parts of Yorkshire..let's hope it doesn't cause any damage this time....:o(

Thank you for the lovely comments. I keep a record of time spent from the designing to cutting out, sewing and binding. In total 68hours and 48 mins :o). The quilt is mainly machine stitched though the binding is finally slip stitched by hand. That takes about 4.5 hours. I do, do some hand quilting but I enjoy machine piecing as you see results quickly.
The bowls took Hubby about 12 hrs in total. I am still finding wood shavings :o))
The river Hull has topped its banks in places, but just into fields, so at least the warnings for Yorkshire were about right Bloomer.

Congratulations to both you and hubby Seaburn, your gifts to each other are really special, anybody can go spend money and although appreciated I always think a gift like you both gave does actually have more meaning, thoughtfulness and hours spent doing them says it all...

Congratulations Eileen - to you both. And how lovely to give each other home-crafted presents! Your quilt is very imaginative, and your OH's bowls very unusual . . . definitely things to be treasured.
We took down an old Lilac in the garden, and invited a friend who loves wood to come and help himself. The next week we were given a beautiful little bowl made from our Lilac - such a thoughtful gift :))

lilac is a lovely wood Sheila. Hubby did something similar with one of ours but because it wasn't allowed to 'season' it twisted and split as it dried out. we knew it would and he wanted to see if it became 'prettier'. but because it split it went on the fire.
you know so many of you are correct and my mum used to say 'its the thought that counts not the cost'. Some of her [and mine] treasures were things we had made/found but suited her to the ground. We have instilled this into our girls over the years. They gave us a photo of us, sounds odd but apart from one wedding picture it is the only other picture of us together. We have loads of the girls with one of us but as it either him or me taking the picture we are never together.

I'm in a local group too and it is very supportive and helpful. We share lots of ideas.
I do make quilts of all sizes from cot quilts to full sized bed ones for a small fee. I enjoy the challenge rather than do it for monetary gain.

That is lovely to know you all share ideas Seaburngirl
Fantastic you make different sizes and for others yes I can understand its an enjoyable challenge more than monetary. gains I use to be the same doing sewing alterations for staff at a school also paintings and flower arrangements just charged them the cost of materials.

The weather is warming up at long last. Now is the time to put the sewing away and enjoy your garden again.
