A very unexpected visitor.

When I got home at 2.30 from a follow up appointment at hospital I was amazed to see this visitor under the bird feeders.
I was able to put hedgehog food out for him in the feeding tray that I was bought for Xmas. I also put water down. I didn’t get that close to it before the balling instinct took over. It was bright and clear eyed and happy to ward of a blackbird that came close. After 10 mins feeding it walked quickly across to hide [nest] under the Acuba.
I suspect it is one of last year’s babies and whilst I am concerned it is awake after the snow and the cold I am cheered that it looks lively/alert and feeding well.

I would love to see hedgehogs in my garden but I am told there are none around here because of the large numbers of badgers. I thought they only appeared in the evening, unless sick?

during the summer they used to come out to feed about 7pm on wards, so not in the dark, but they do forage at night. I suspect hunger has made this one come out but all its behaviours seemed good. Any ill ones I have come across rarely curl up and this certainly responded very quickly. I checked with the local vet who does a lot of wildlife work and she said probably just hungry as it didn't show any signs of distress. But if I get the chance to weigh it do so [it needs to be about 500g], if under that I have the address of the local hedgehog 'lady'.

I don’t remember ever having a hedgehog in my garden...not in anyof the three gardens I’ve had. But thefirsttwo were too urban and this one has chicken wire fence. You are very lucky!

They do come into urban gardens sometimes, Karen, it was in our old one that we used to see them in the evenings. Shame they are so rarely seen nowadays.

How super, we used to see hedgehogs regularly, even had one nest in the garden with 4 babies, mmm that was xxx years ago. Don't see any now but occasionally see their calling card.

Fantastic! I had one earlier last summer and Richard made it a hog house and we filled it with straw...and that was the last we saw of him. We get a lot of cats visiting our garden at night and I'm blaming that for scaring him off.

What a lovely surprise to get home & find a Hedgehog in your back garden!
We have seen some around here & in fact one of our gkids tried to stroke it a couple of years ago! Fortunately for him - & the poor wee beastie - he didn't get to touch it before I saw him & called him away at the same time as his Mum who also saw what he was about to do!
I've seen lots of Hedgehog remains on the streets here as well. 😞 When I used to do night shift at a factory before I retired I'd often see them running around the streets on my way to work. I even came face to face with a fox once when I was retuning home just after midnight! The only time I've ever seen a real, live fox!

Lovely to see! Haven’t had a hedgehog in the garden for several years, sadly. Used to put food out for them too. We do have the odd fox, although quite rare. They come to have a drink from the pond.

I don't think I've ever seen a hedgehog. I'm more likely to get raccoons & skunks.

it was out feeding again last night. he is hunkering down during the day in the undergrowth between the beech hedge and acuba under a pile of leaves.

So pleased he is alert and eating Seaburn, I've also seen evidence that ours have been out foraging, its very early but lets face itk the weird weather is confusing us all..

Hum, you are making me quite envious. I have never seen a live one here in the past 12 years (like Ginelli, there are badgers about, though come t think of it I haven't seen any sign of them either for a long time , fortunately.

well I have had hedgehog poo in the garden off and on for a fortnight now. tonight he was out foraging so he has had a plenty of food. when I went out he immediately balled up and stayed that way for 10 mins after I had gone back in doors to watch from the conservatory.
