its a good job i forgot my wallet!

went out at lunch time to grab a sandwich at my local Lidl store. Can you guess the rest?

yes i got the cheapest sarnie on the self. ran back to the car and scrabbled in every nook and cranny to find as much money as possible. found a £5 note in one and lots of ‘shrapnel’ in the ash tray. kept searching and went back in with almost £12. now some of you might be wondering why a smart well dressed woman would behave like a beggar. some of you, know you would do the same. altogether now…….PLANTS!!!!!!

so this is what i purchased all pre packed/bagged and in very good health:
Dahlia ‘Park Princess’ candy pink catcus flowered 3 £2.29
Dahlia ‘Crazy Love’ soft lilac with darker lilac edging, waterlily type 3. same price. £2.29
Gladiolus ‘Thats Love’ soft pinky mauve with a deeper magenta centre. 20 £2.29
Gladiolus ‘Margerite Rose’ yellow/vermillion colour 20 £2.29
Dutch Iris ‘Blue Magic’ 40 a lovely rich blue £1.29
Astilbe spirea, white, 2 packs each with 2 smallish plants £0.69 per pack

It was so difficult deciding what to buy so had I had my credit card I dread to think what I would have come home with. They had many types & colours of lilies, Liatrus spicata, Anemone deCaen, and many other pre pack perennials including Phlox, Kniphofia, Soladigo, Commemelia [spelling?]
Gypsophillia, Aqualegia.

So tomorrow I am in the greenhouse potting up and then if the weather stays good I will have to tidy the 2 borders where most of these will grow. I have 40’ long by 5-6’ deep border that is primarily whites, pinks and blues/mauves. and a 30 × 6′ border that is reds/oranges/yellows. the only draw back is that the red/yellow border only gets full sun until 10/11 am whilst the blue border gets sun from 2pm until about 6pm due to shade from trees/houses etc.

So if you have a Lidl near by get down there but dont spend the house keeping. You have been warned ;o)

The best bit apart from the plants was seeing the young lad’s face on the till when all these 5p 2p coins skittered about with the odd 20 & 50p. :o))

Lidl has been mentioned before at our garden club but I have only ever been there a couple of times. I will have to think of a reason to go.

I went to get some sand the other day and came back with another poppy and several iris'. So I have to be carefull if I only pop out for a paper.

Yes - get your priorities right ! Anyway food is only there to keep us alive so that we can be in our gardens.
I'll be going near a Lidl on Monday. I'll see what's there.

believe me going without a good lunch is very rare for me.
planted everything up today. only one soft iris bulb but its gone in anyway. on the way back from lunch called in at the gc for more compost and came out with 3 pots of iris reticulata, not sure which one will find out and let yoou know. also bought culinary sage as mine looks v v v v dead.

after afternoon cuppa set to cutting, no hacking back the escallonia. ache now but feel good.

I've been there, lol!! The only bad thing I've heard about Lidls is that they sometimes have incorrect labelling. I don't mind cos I'm only a newbie and wouldn't know whether it was right or wrong, and I just love growing anything!

You'll have to post pics to show us how they get on.

cheers

I dont think you need worry as all the things I got were pre packaged. Certainly last year their plug perennials had some wrong labels but I think thats down to customers who like us take the label out to have a closer look, but perhaps shove it in the wrong pot. That often happens when I am selling plants at my local hospice. grrrr.

Calling a plant by the wrong name is no big deal. The plant just won't answer you when you talk to it. LOL right Hywel :) and you do finally figure out the correct name...even if it is years later.

thats true but some people enjoy telling you your labels are all wrong. Then of course they dont believe you didnt make the mistake in the first place. Biggest label muddler was my youngest girl who just liked bringing me the labels so i could read the funny names to her. bless!
