quite a nice weekend for some

Whilst many of you suffered horrendous wind and rain on Saturday I awoke to a dry day. It was due to a phone call at 5.30 dragging hubby into work extra early.

I lay there hoping Morpheus would call again….. still waiting really.

So by 8 am the sky was clear blue and I was out there in wellies and a fleece. Other clothes too I am not that strange.
It was surprisingly mild so after discarding the fleece I set to tidying the small flower beds in front of the pond.

So out came the summer bedding, the pelargoniums were taken into the greenhouse and made into neat cuttings.
I then planted the Bellis daisies that my 12 year old had bought me. Then I spread my own leaf mould as a deep mulch around the P. denticulata and the Heuchera sanguinea.

I then moved onto my shed border. This was a basic weeding and tidy up and again I spread mulch to help the weed suppressing ritual. I was pleased to see my first Crocus sativus in flower, next to a very hopefull Echinacea ‘White swan’. I renovated this boder in June and have been delighted with the way it has grown.

After a quick lunch break, I started tidying under the beech tree. I raked leaves, trimmed back a few straggly plants, moved some Helibores and then re mulched again.

By 2.30 pm the wind was getting up and it started spitting. Well the rain didnt put me off but the twigs coming off the beech tree in the breeze was very unsettling. Then it rained with a vengence so I headed into the green house. But the flying debris from the trees made it feel unsafe.

A wet and foul night then ensued and next day by about noon things were looking better.

I then noticed how pretty the conifers looked, even though some are being ‘absorbed’ by others.

And that was my pleasant weekend, though I did buy some pink primula/polyanthus to join the Bellis and I did wonder what had been feasting on the P.denticulata.

Hope you and your gardens are recovering from last week and things stay a bit more balanced this week.

I am hoping for a calm dry weekend too.

your leafmould looks wonderful!

There is always something satisfying about the autumn tidy up, isnt there?

It is certainly useful to be able to retreat to the greenhouse sometimes

ill settle for dry but calm would be a bonus...

its predominantly beech leaves but it takes 3-4 yrs to get to that dark crumbly stage. The birds love it especially the robin and blackbirds. there are so many critters in there.

Not too bad here on Saturday, but from Monday until today it has been quite wild. I'm glad you were able to get so much done. I like your conifers. They look nice and bright.

Your garden is looking very neat and tidy. Mine is horrendous! I am going to go out shortly and attack it! I worked on Saturday but by late morning we had to close the nursery because the roof was moving on the greenhouse the previous Tuesday it was hit by a tornado which went through Hampshire we lost quarter of the roof then It was repaired on Friday so when the wind hit on Saturday it was enough to scare us off!!

oh no that sounds horrendous sueb. hope you stay safe.
enjoy getting out there today.

nice blog and you did get lots done, looks lovely and tidy sea,, i really like the shrub in picture 8 with yellow flowers, think they have prickly leaves, glad ive seen your gives me an idea of how they grow, i saw one at gc and couldnt decide, i want one now :o)) is it mahonia sea... ?

19 Nov, 2009

Its a mahonia 'Lionel Fortescue' its an upright form and this is about 7ft tall now sanbaz. It was 3ft when i got it. I do have a more common shrubby one but i really liked the upright form of this one.

I enjoyed the fresh air and it is a good feeling when everything is tidy. still lots to do though Spritz. Hoping to get out there again this weekend weather permitting.

will it get any taller sea or is that about the size it will grow, i want something thats not going to take over and really like these

19 Nov, 2009

hubby says it was nearer 5ft when we got it so it hasnt grown much in the 12 yrs we have had it. I have it in semi shade as you can see thanks to the beech hedge. the sun comes behind the hedge, so you are looking south at the border. it doesnt give a final height but you can prune it and make it multi stemmed.
