A different way to use a spade /hoe

Like many of you we have had a lot of snow and today the badly rutted road in the cul-de-sac where I live finally got me. I had to move my car out so that hubby and eldest child could go out on an extended driving lesson.
Then the fun started: 20 mins later the car was now at 90 degrees to the curb and stuck, wheels spinning; with an eldery neighbour offering to push the car. I declined his gallant offer, mangaed to get the car back to the curb and headed off to the shed.
Spade and hoe in hand I started to attack the 4" ice ruts. Bit by bit I cleared enough to get the car back in. I then thought well why not clear abit more of the road so that when daughter comes back she will be able to reverse in safely. Why do I do this? Answers on the back of a postage stamp please.
Victoria 12 helped for about 2 hrs and another 5 neighbours started doing their bits to help solve the problem. It was a bit like the blitz spirit according to one of the neighbours. He observed that apart from Victoria I was the youngest out there and the only woman [I’m 51 by the way] and he also noticed the 6 young men in the street were conspicuous by their absence.
They did drive in and out a couple of times and gave us the thumbs up. I had to wave at them with all my fingers :o) as Victoria was out there. In fact one of the 30 something couples came out to watch, while they drank their coffee and said what a sterling job we were doing.
Victoria bless her then disappeared and emerged 5 mins later with coffee for the 6 of us workers, strangley the couple disappeared at that point. By 12.30 she had had enough so she went in to get warm.
By 2 pm there were 2 of us left but the road was clear and I had done my pavement too. I feel very virtuous but gosh do I ache.
So I will be off to have a deep warm bath and hope that the forecast snow passes me by.
But at least I got my spade and hoe out and they were well and truely used.
Now ‘tomorrow is another day’ as some one from Gone with the Wind once said :
Will I tackle the moss in the greenhouse?………..
Probably…….
Not.

I think the idle ones think we're just crazy - if I clear the leaves my neighbour shouts, your wasting your time, they'll be back tomorrow. We wouldnt want to be idle though, would be Seaburn :-)

They say those idiot things because they feel guilty about their laziness Dawn !!!
Some of 'my' neighbours say idiot things and i just smile and wave back these days, given up talking to them ....... they're 'don't-ers' :-/

Same here Louise, lol. I've just about managed to block them out now with plants so they can't see me and pass on their sarcastic comments.

We get endless amusment from our neighbours comments. sometimes funny and sometimes ironic. thing is they dont even realise.

well done seaburn,we live in a cul de sac too, hubby cleared outside our house & part of road only one other person did theirs ,the road is on a bit of hill and was like a skating rink, one young couple tried for an hour & half to get their car to top of street at one stage she went to her house and came back help him brandishing 2 "umbrellas"?? and started scratching at the ice,i thought it was so funny i took a quick photo, but if every one had done their bit it would have helped all the neighbours

ours is also on a slope but we are near the top thankfully. Sadly no grit/salt bins near by either.
thats so true if everyone did a little bit it would make such a difference.
and the woman in Gone with the Wind was Scarlet O'Hara. her name just came to me then.

Poor you, Sbg - you deserve a medal! I hope you're not too ache-y today.
Some people are just.....idle and totally unhelpful! :-(((
30 Dec, 2009
a little ache-y today.
and to add insult to injury nearly all of it has melted as the temp is now up to 7.5 centigrade. cold north-easterly wind too.
sorted out a few pots of plants to take to our next HPS meeting and then came in to find hubby was washing the walls down in the kitchen to re-paint it. so rest of day spent doing that.
