Gravel garden

I am in the process of getting quotes to get rid of grass at top end of the garden and replace with gravel and a patio, i am finding the garden quite hard work these days and hopefully this idea will make the work a bit easier, i am the only one who gardens hubby not interested at all, he will cut the hedge for me and do any heavy lifting etc., but has no interest at all in plants.

this is the part to gravel up to the archway, i will leave the grass past the archway for Rocky to bounce around on!! The garden itself is approx 100’ long from the house to the fence at the bottom, i love it but if i can get rid of the grass this end it will make it so much easier to care for and i can still have plants in tubs dotted round the patio area.

I am so looking forward to seeing it done and having a nice place to sit in comfort to have a cuppa!!

I understand exactly what you're saying Sewingk.....My OH hasn't any interest in the garden at all...he also does heavy work for me and cuts the grass...Im thinking of taking most of the front garden away..its only small anyway and im more interested in the back garden....Im finding it all a bit too much lately... Glad to know you are feeling better...:>)

Have a look at my small garden sewingk, I don't have any grass at all. I put a double liner underneath the gravel to stop the weeds from coming through and so far it has worked.

Have you looked at 'Gravel Gardens' on here, SK? Lots of good designs to maybe get some ideas. My OH does nothing in the garden unless I'm desperately in need of a tall man to trim something I can't reach! Don't think he'd know how to mow a lawn ... lol!

Go for it,Sk,you will wish you had done it,years ago..makes life so much easier. It isn't just the grass cutting,is it? its all the edges to do,the weed and feeding, etc.Hard work when you get older, and I don't miss that at all.My OH isn't interested either, but does the small front lawn, which he doesn't mind, but apart from giving me a hand with the heavy stuff..that's it...I think some men,..only some, don't like mucky hands,..must be because they have " hands that do dishes, can be soft as your face "syndrome.Lol.

As Bloomer said, Go Fot It SW, I have a graveled area in my back garden (as you know) and its really low maintenance, Theres a couple of borders there too, Hub is building a raised bed out of decking as i speak :) over one of the borders, I will post pics when its finished, And yes, he has no interest in planting either but he,s great at at all the building stuff... So, what you waiting for lol get him out there right now... Question, will you be edging round it?

Good luck SW with all your gravel plans. It seems to be more popular than ever now to make our gardens less maintenance intensive; I'm sure you'll be very pleased with your new area....look forward to pics :)

Yes youngdaisy i am thinking of a brick edging as suggested by one of the firms that came round, it will keep the gravel contained.
I have looked on here for gravel gardens there are a lot!! i was a bit worried it would look like a graveyard....do you know what i mean? maybe its just me lol, but having seen the ones on here they don't!!
You are right bloomer it seems to take me longer to do this end than any other part of the garden! Will be glad when its gone and i can just sit and look at the rest lol.

It will be much better with an edging Sk,and brick colour is nice, mine are like that, but more like setts,as they were easier to lay with it being a round one.I thought they looked a bit too bright at first, but they have mellowed, and so has the gravel,so much nicer now.Another bonus is,that if it is very icy, like this winter, you won't slip,if you need to walk on it,unlike paving. It also melted away quicker, with having a breathable membrane underneath,so good drainage too...a lot of advantages, over lawn, and paving, from a safety point of view..

You'll be glad to get rid of the grass. I've got rid of it all from here. It's hard work and time consuming, not to mention boring.. Pattios and gravel areas and flower beds are much nicer. I'm looking forward to seeing photos of how it looks after it's done :))
