Here is a collection from a few years ago

Another view -

The copper beech taking pride of place . . .

. . and a bit of a jumble!

These were taken with an old camera. If we get some sunshine tomorrow, I will attempt some better pics for you. :))

They are lovely Sheila, have you trained them all yourself?

They are all little stars aren't they?

I love all things small and they are just lovely!

You're very kind Lil, Lincs and Wildrose - thank you. I don't train them with wire, just prune them judiciously!

How lovely Sheila , I have one set of Bonsai trees grown from Conkers that my children picked up when they were little which means the trees must be nearly 30 odd years old they would have been about 8/10 years old when they picked them up .... They are in bud at the moment .......

Looking down can make you smile :) Reading about leaf pruning.

A Copper Beech ...fantastic

The beech is beautiful. How old is it and how often do you have to trim it?

These are gorgeous Sheilabub! You must be very proud of them

Soooo good Sheila! I'd love to see each one close up. The copper beech is to die for...

What's the one in the bottom pic with the orange leaves?

Amy ~ thank you, they're fun, aren't they?

Pimm's ~ good comment, I'm smiling, thank you :))

Steragram ~ thanks: it's about 10 years old, and very rarely needs trimming.

Scottish ~ very kind of you, thank you, I just enjoy looking after them (and it's something I can do sitting down, lol!).

Sev ~ bless you; yes, they really need separate pics. Funny you should ask about that tree . . . I have to admit I've no idea what it is! (Maybe I'll put up a question with a better photo . . )

perfect place !

I see you have a Cotoneaster on the go..I was thinking I may start with a Pyracantha or I have three very small Holly seedlings given to me by the blackbird,

20 Apr, 2012

Yes Pimm's . . . the Cotoneaster is one of my favourites, because it produces tiny berries. I've found that seedlings are the best way to start - most of mine are from seedlings dug up from this garden (or elsewhere); growing from seed is very slow. Pyracantha would be a great subject! Another great book is "Bonsai from native trees and shrubs", by W.M.Busch - it doesn't mention Holly, but hey - what's to lose?!

Gosh Sheila, you are doing really well with those bonsai. I think I shall try it with your Cercis seedlings once they get a bit bigger! Not all of course, but one or two. Shall I send one or two seedlings back to you so you can also do that?

Just had a thought....wouldn't a few like this look great in my little 'japanese' area...hmmm....next project! lol...you will need to advise as I go!

20 Apr, 2012

Lol, Karen!! Typically kind of you, but I really ought to grow my own from the roughly 100 Cercis pods that we pulled off the other day . . .

Yes - great idea for your Japanesey area - and you could always buy one or two to start off with. Two of mine are from Bonsai nurseries - the Larch and the Copper Beech. :))

20 Apr, 2012

Well, yes, I could. I think there is a bonsai nursery at Blairgowrie...Kath would know.
