Bonsai for Howee74

These photos were taken last September Howee . . . just to show you what I’ve been up to for the last 20 or so years . . . some are a lot younger than that of course.
The one on the top left in blue bowl is a Copper Beech . .
. . bottom right was an Acer, but it’s died.
Among the others are Hawthorn, Apple, Beech and Ash; some are either unknown or ‘amnesia’ lol.
I wonder what Sandi Toksvig was doing in my garden?!

You have a lovely wee collection there Sheila - Do you do a new one every year?

Thanks Scottish. I'm not as methodical as that: just play with tree seedlings as the mood takes me. This morning I took another photo as I have a mini Magnolia which has given me my first ever flower on a bonsai!

Lol, Sandy, I too love the amnesia varieties ! :)

Sheila love your plants , can you tell me is your arbour roof waterproof what have you got covering it ? We are thinking of covering ours in with trellis at the moment the top is covered with a clematis Montana about to flower but OH keeps saying we should make a little more draught proof and your look really lovely .

Many thanks Gill!
Thank you Kidsgran - the arbour is our favourite place in the garden, as we can sit and watch the birds and the squirrels there. We've even had supper there this year, but only twice as the roof is not waterproof. It's Willow, which can be bought in a 6ft roll, (I like the shadows it casts) and that's also a Clematis Montana which you can see climbing around. :)

Cheers San :))

Thanks, will think about willow maybe under the montana and trellis around the sides ours is our favorite place as we too can watch the birds they carry on feeding despite us being very close by :o)

I love the shadows cast by the trellis and willow . . . when the sun decides to shine that is :)

Love bonsai trees and would love to produce one of my own. Years ago I tried with beech and oak without any success, so gave up, but I have several ash seedlings in the garden now .... having seen your babies I am inspired to try again. Wish me luck!

Good luck Xela, and feel free to PM me if there's any way I can help! The difficult part is ignoring them for a year or two, while they get on with growing :)

Many thanks, Sheila. I shall have to get a move on and find a suitable pot, they grow at such a rate it won't be long before they are too difficult to dig up.

They are brilliant Sheila, what happened to the Acer? My little Silver Birch is coming along nicely but I think the pot may be too small. I am on the look out for a glazed one like your Beech pot.
Btw I had two baby Birches to chose from and so I potted up the one I didn't use.....It's 3ft tall now and such a contrast to the Bonsai :o))

Thanks Annie . . . do show us a pic of your little Silver Birch - it sounds great: how long have you had it? Were the babies seedlings found in your garden? (You're making me think I should try one!).
I don't know why the Acer died - I obviously wasn't giving it enough TLC :((

The seedlings came from a friends garden, she has lots popping up. I will ask her to save one for you and post it on if you like. I started mine off early last year when the plants were about eight inches tall. The ''unbonsaid'' one has grown at a rate of knots. I'm going to buy one of the small Acers from Morrisons and have a go with that next, £2.99 so worth a try. All inspired from your blog :o))

Wow! that's an offer I can't refuse . . . thanks so much. Have to dash out - talk later.
21 May, 2013
Sending you a PM Annie . . . and good luck with the Acer (I'm flattered that you're inspired!). They don't grow very fast, but make good subjects.

You have a delightful selection, have you any close up photographs, my eyes are not that brilliant.......sorry to be a pain!!

I love your bonsai Sheila, especially that copper beech. I might give growing them another go. My last lot were killed by vine weevil, but that was a long time ago and there are products I can use against them now. Shame you lost your acer, but you've still got lots of really interesting little trees there, a lovely collection.
