What a Scilly holiday!

When you go away on your summer holiday, you don’t expect to pack a fleece and an anorak, but if you head for the Scilly Isles in April that is exactly what you need. We flew from the tiny airport at Lands End where they weigh the customers(!) and landed safely in a gale 30 minutes later. On arrival the seas were raging . . . this was the view from the house we rented.

We were grateful that the owners had cut a ‘window’ in the hedge so that we could enjoy the view from indoors.

Our useful golf buggy – hired it to enjoy exploring St Mary’s (hills too steep for me). We kept stopping for a walk through a wood . .

seeing white ‘bluebells’ everywhere . .

. . . or to a deserted beach,

or two. Lovely to have such peace and quiet with no commercialisation anywhere.

Loved the lush roadside planting

and someone’s ‘wild’ front garden . .

Found this bird hide on one of our diversions, and saw a heron glide in to land:

sorry – he’s hiding in the reeds!

Our favourite lunch spot, Juliet’s garden.

Loved this cake shop with imaginative icing.

We had a great time beachcombing, and would love to have got a better shot of the crystal-clear water.

OH on another deserted beach . .

. . and another where people had taken the trouble to build these. It’s what you do when you have all the time in the world – OH’s good one in the centre!

Bliss when the wind dropped and we could enjoy the wonderful colour of the water when calm, while sipping a glass of wine.

I believe the islands are warmer in mid-summer, but if you like the natural world and “doing nothing” this is a good place :))

Oh what a delight your Scilly Isles blogs are Sheila, i didn't realise you could fly over still....I loved the helicopter to Tresco, it was like a minibus that flew ( not such a rocky trip as Harry Potters night bus!)
must say i have never fancied the ferry crossing....
your cottage was beautifully placed, simply bliss ?

Thanks very much Pam. We were in the Skybus (very small plane) - no helicopters any more. Yes, we were lucky with the cottage . . . give me a view of water and I'm happy!

Will you go back do you think?
have you been to the Channel Islands, we so enjoyed Sark last year the Signeurie gardens there are glorious.....all the roses were out and with no traffic all you could hear was birdsong....

Yes, I would love to go back Pam.

Julia, these days you can choose from Newquay, Exeter and Lands End airports . . all small planes. The helicopters used to fly from Penzance, but not any more. We did see a couple while there, but they would have been privately hired, or maybe for a medical emergency.

Well, thats put the tin lid on it for me..small plane + gale= 2 days of sickness. Well, you'll just have to go back on my behalf Sheila, and do nothing all over again! Lovely place!

Lol Karen . . . I'm sure the wind will die down for you sometime soon, but I can see how that thought would discourage you :( Do you have a proper summer holiday planned . . . somewhere warm?!

What an idyllic place, Sheila, and what a wonderful position your holiday cottage had! I totally agree about a view of the water. I always choose somewhere as close to the sea as possible - it makes the holiday for me. Wonderful pictures of a lovely place.

Thank you Susanne for your lovely comments . . . yes, there's something about a water view that brings on the smiles!!

A nice peaceful and relaxing place.

The flora looks amazing and the beaches unspoilt. I love places like this Sheila but I do not like wind. Wind is my enemy. Although, the views are fantastic. I know nothing about these Islands and will have to google. I enjoyed looking at your photos. Thank you for posting.

There are small....and large islands all around Britain Klahanie, from the Shetland isles nearer to scandinavia than London the Channel Island just off France....and many inbetween, all different and beautiful......some can be walked to when the tide is right and others very isolated......

It is, Bathgate, thanks :)

Thank you Klahanie! I do love islands, but I don't suppose many are as windy as the Scillies (except perhaps the Azores?!).

Thank you for the info Pamg and Sheila. I was wondering what people do there for employment and if they were indigenous and how big population they have. I think I got my answers from Mr. Google (or is it Mrs. Google?).
I love traveling blogs .I learn something new every time.
:-)

What would we do without Google, Klahanie?! I agree that it's so interesting reading about GoYers' travel, and it was great to see so many of your own photos of Mexico too.

Now I know I would love to have a holiday there, it has everything I enjoy Sheila, I can spend hours building with the pebbles on a beach and also taking photo's, thankyou for sharing these lovely photo,s...

Many thanks Lincs - hope you get there one day!

Just an idyllic place to visit,Sheila..and you have some lovely memories to look back on too, with all these photo's..I didn't know the planes didn't go from Penzance anymore so at least there is more choice..I'm not sure if I would have the courage to go on a small plane..that's my main concern, and one of the reasons I've never been..

9 May, 2015

Don't worry about the small plane, Bloomer, it's better than the ferry on choppy seas! The flight is only 25 minutes, so it would be worth being brave . . .

9 May, 2015

I guess it is,Sheila..If I braved a cable car up to Santorini, and also one to the gardens in Madeira,I'm sure I could conquer that as well..It could take me some time to pluck up courage .. Mind over matter,if you want to do something badly enough :o)..

I loved seeing your photographs, we went by sea on the S.S Scillonian and boy was it rough, OH and myself were the only people not to be seasick!! would love to go back one day!

12 May, 2015

Thanks Angela . . . that ferry has a ferocious reputation: I gather people rarely use it twice! Good for you to have coped. Yes, the islands are lovely aren't they - so different and unspoilt.

I have only just found this Sheila and what a treat it has been!

I think you had all four seasons on those islands but obviously made the most of every moment!

I shall see if your husband's sculpture is still there at the end of June!! Which island please?

It IS a special place.

Hi Chris. This is on St Mary's where we were staying, and the pebble beach is at the end of the peninsula called Peninnis Head. We walked from Old Town Bay. (the beach might be called Piper's Hole)

16 May, 2015

I know where it is Sheila, I shall have a look!
Thank you.
