Spitfires over Pagham Harbour 2015

Went to Pagham harbour, RSPB reserve to watch the ‘Battle of Britain revival Fly past’. It took 1 1/2 hours on the A27 to do 4 miles, so great was the interest. At Noon, when the flypast was due we were stuck in traffic , but because of bad weather it was delayed till 2pm.

So had a walk thro’ the reserve,

And saw a Grey Phalarope (quite rare) or so a ‘Twitcher said. Sorry about the quality of the photograph, (it’s really a pic of my Canary, only joking).

By 2 pm the sun had come out and the 34 planes started coming in groups of 4 to 8.

Siris, we heard the aircraft before we saw them fly over South of us! They must have been over the Channel and were heading East, wonderful sight. Hope you liked Pagham, lovely place . :o)

Bad mood when in the traffic jam, but the peace of the bird sanctuary revived us. All the planes went to Selsey Bill, then turned either west or east to fly to other places.

So glad you managed to see the flypast after all. and its great to hear that the lagoon is now a reserve.

This takes me right back to the 1950's. We were on Pagham beach when the sound barrier was broken for the first time - we saw the plane and heard the bang - and didn't know what it was until we saw a poster advertising the evening paper! (Though OH has just told me it wasn't the first time after all) We had so many happy holidays there - and I learned to like sardine sandwiches there too! (so hungry I would have eaten anything)

Wasn't it great that Prince Harry gave up his seat in one of the planes to a 94 year old veteran of the original battle?

Reminiscence time, Steragram, Just been watching on the TV about the festival at Goodwood. No doubt HRH, will get another chance, the 94 yr Wing Co probably won't. I have lived all my life in the South and remember sonic booms in my youth. Still occasionally eat sardines on toast for lunch.

Me too...(the sardines, not the south)

Wonderful for you to see the flypast
Harry seems a nie guy doesn't he...

Spitfiresare very special, my dad was in the Raf, only ground crew butimportant none the less

only seen the bird in books, a treat, especially as someone was able to recognise it!

Doesn't it make you feel proud.

Pam, Lots of 'Twitchers' in the reserve, only there for the feathered birds, there was another rarity there, but I've forgotten the name. Ground crew were v. important. At the revival there were supposed to be 40 flying, but only 34 flew in the end.
Yes indeed Thorney. We owe that generation an awful lot.

Pam, There were quite a few 'Twichers' there, only for the feathered 'birds'. Apparently another rarity, but I've forgotten the name.
The ground crew were incredibly important too, without them the planes would not be able to be turned round so quickly. Only 34 of the 40 planes, due to fly were able to fly, during the revival.
Yes indeed, Thorney. We owe so much to them for our existence today.

Thanks for the images. I had my camera ready but no plane in sight!

Six of my cousins served in the RAF before and after WW2 . I have fond memories of standing on our shed roof and waving a tea towel, while one of them flew his plane over and waggled its wings.

Beautiful plane, the Spitfire.

I was just looking at the news on my tablet, loads of photos of the new labour leader refusing to sing the national anthem at the memorial service, a disgrace whatever your politics......The veterans and the lost don't deserve that.

And that's only the beginning...

Eirlys, you know it was postponed from 11.30 till 2 pm because of poor visibility in the morning. We watched the whole lot fly over, lasted about 35 minutes.

Thanks for the blog, would love to have gone, traffic jams, OH would not have been a happy bunny!!. how lucky you were that it was late?....the spitfire is a remarkable plane, as were the pilots who flew them.
Are you sure it wasn't your canary!! tbt have you actually got one, it was very quiet when we visited lol

27 Sep, 2015

Dd, no we don't have a canary. It was a lovely afternoon, after our bickering about the traffic. Splendid to see those remarkable planes.

Never to late to look at photos, particularly on a wet afternoon. I often look thro' my Favs. pics later, particularly if I was busy when they were posted.
