My Plants are Grounded!

Unfortunately the Post Office in the centre of our town (upgraded from a large village) has closed at short notice!!
In order to send plants to my friends I would now have to go by car to another PO, a few miles away. My next door neighbour said that they tried to send a box from the next nearest PO, but that PO would not accept it as they said they were overflowing and could not cope with any more.
What a lark, especially with the run-up to Christmas.
Grumble ongoing.

Gosh that’s frustraighting, how on earth can they turn business down, it beggars belief especially when Xmas is still some way off.

That's progress for you :(

That’s terrible Siris! I wonder if your friends would appreciate seeds for presents?! That’s what I’m giving this year - so easy to post - and I buy them from Seedaholic who send them beautifully illustrated with comprehensive info - brilliant 🙂.

Out nearest POs are both 20mins drive away, in opposite directions and one of them doesn't accept parcels after 12 midday - and not at all on Fridays. So sending you sympathy and understanding!

Same happened to mine in the village last year. The actual PO was closed and put into a local shop. After about six months this closed and sign said closed for two weeks for a few times and never opened again. Same thing in the next village so I have to go further afield. They tell the same story. They want the Post office staffed the same as shop opening hours which are around 6a.m. till 10p.m. in our shop. I now go to a larger village's PO when I need to post things but wonder how long this one's going to last.
Regarding the run up to Christmas, I saw the union man on tv saying they were going on strike for the run up and when asked could a strike be left till January his answer was that the run up would cause maximum disruption. Nice! There's that Christmas spirit we all know and love.

We have the same thing happening here with Post office closures our nearest one had closed recently we didn't even know it had closed ,we had to go several miles to post a gift to our grandson for his birthday , I don't know how people will cope if they haven't any transport ..

Daft as it may seem that although we live in a town we find it easier to drive approx. 6miles to a village if we need to send a parcel, most of the sub post offices have closed down in recent years, one remains but is the opposite side of town to us, definitely not within walking distance if one has a bulky parcel, the general is not open weekends, usually nowhere to park, the queues are always horrendous, I remember a couple of years ago, we lost two more PO 's and a petition was sent to the power's that be to try and save them, the intention was to open a counter in one of the local supermarkets, that was all flannel to shut people up as it never came to pass.....

Seems like a lot of us have lost our convenient POs. Am I showing my age in saying I don't know what is happening to the UK/world.

Hello Siris :-)
What a pain in the bum.
We’re lucky to have a post office in the village and also on a Wednesday only a community mobile post office, it’s great, it’s one guy who does 2 hours in each village then moves to the next, he uses village halls, good parking and no queuing

we have to same problem in our village too. but we find using a courier like hermes is similar value and there are 2 shops within 5 miles of us who will accept them. post office is further away.

It's because of the internet. We can now email & text each other rather than actually mail letters to each other. There is a post office counter at the supermarket where I shop - how convenient. They also have a pharmacy, credit union, eye care center, medical clinic & florist/garden center. The postal carrier's truck also serves as a mobile post office. It's very convenient but you need to be ready and know where & when to catch him, no dilly-dally or chit chat, lol!

How awful, Siris. It is happening all over now, closing post offices, pubs and little shops in villages. How on earth do people manage if they have no form of transport? Even buses seem to be irregular through villages and small towns..
I’m fortunate I do live close to pretty much all necessities, which I do not take for granted.

We are lucky enough to have one in our local supermarket...but always a queue and it's not likely to shut .....thankfully...

when we moved into our village 24yrs ago we had a dairy, post office, 2 shops and a pub.
we still have the pub but that is all. we had buses every hour from 6am to 6pm. now its 1 every 2 hrs starting at 7 and finishing at 5pm.

No wonder the kids hate the rural life when its the taxi of mum and dad or stay at home. Roads unlit with little or no pavement.

I stopped the Christmas stupidity 6 years ago. No present
giving at all. It was costing all my pension from July onwards every year. Your presence is more welcome than your presents - as our Rector used to say.
Think the packet of seeds idea is good one. About £3, a
card, and a stamp. Much better.

ps. I enjoy making Metcalfe cardboard models in the winter months on the kitchen table. They would make a
good present about £8 - £10 post free, can be ordered on
line and go direct to the recipient.
www.Metcalfe Models and Toys.

p.p.s. The models would be useful to help a child to grow
a seed tray garden for a school competition in the summer.
N Scale models would be ideal for this.

We have one bus a weekm leaving the village at 10.30 am and returning some time after 2.00pm.What people without cars do if they have a doctors or dentists appointment I can't imagine - they will just have to depend on kind neighbours or up sticks and move into town.

Goldenoldie, some good ideas there!

The reason for the Post Office's closure has been on national TV. It has now been reopened.
