A very cold day in Somerset.

I don’t know how far down the mercury went last night – but I woke up to see a frosted landscape!

I took some photos before I went to church – my car said it was -3 degrees at 10 a.m. Now I realise that this is positively balmy to some members – but it’s cold for our area. The whole garden was white. The frost changed some plants into variegated species!

My new Euonymus japonicus had a white edge to each leaf.

And this Hedera erecta had also become a different species today!

I didn’t know you could get a Helleborus foetidus with stripes…

I was quite impressed with the different ‘look’ the frost gave to my Erigeron karvinskianus – I am going to call them ‘frost daisies’ when they look like this!

The Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ looked great with its frosting. I like it like this – it’s hardy enough to cope with some frost, luckily.

In gardening books, they tell you to leave seedheads on so that you get new seedlings, and garden design books are always saying that ‘this or the other plant’ looks good in the winter. I can see what they mean – under the frost is a Verbena bonariensis seedhead.

This Sedum is in the sunniest place in the garden, so it had started thawing out. I like the ‘look’ of this seedhead, too.

My view from the Garden room was transformed. It really is winter here in Somerset! The temperature has stayed around zero all day, and it was sunny, so I expect the same scene tomorrow.

wow winter wonderland, mine too was all frosted, but no where near as pretty as yours Spritz, hopefully will be in a few years once all is established, my Miscanthus looked amazing, and it stayed all day, but i just had to go out and have a look. even heavier this morning. i think we might just get a proper winter this year, instead of a long autumn and then snow at Easer, like last year. you never know might even get a white Christmas! - can live in hope.

Beautiful - what a lovely view for you from your window. I like the skimmia pic best.

Amazingly, none of the frosted plants suffered after they thawed out - thanks, it was pretty.

From the forecast I've just seen, there's more to come until Friday when rain is back!

Lovely pictures, you have a really beautiful setting, enjoyed your blog as well, we have had a couple of hard frosts, would rather a frost than unusually warm and to me unhealthy weather as it does kill off some of the bugs...
