Jumbo Jets in the garden???

Well, I call them that because of the way they land – usually on top of my double primulas! I have been watching this great fat woodpigeon since before Christmas – he has been working out how to get food off the bird table in spite of the plastic netting tacked on the front supposedly to stop him!

He sat on the top of the roof and looked around every day, come rain, come snow.

He thought and thought about it – you can see he’s working it out! “Dare !? Really”?

Then he decided to go for it…today! “Yes! I can do it – Yaaaay”!

Who says he’s a bird-brain? I reckon he deserves some food after all that thinking!

Birds do have some intellegence. We have starlings that swing on the fat balls and peanut feeders just like the tits.

That is one big fat and determined wood pigeon Spritz....you got to admire him for braving it !

Eating more food ? Oh, no !
Now the pigeons will be even heavier when they land on the double primulas !
Good photos :o)

~I think they are brighter than we give credit for!

Thank goodnes he isn't like a chipmunk stuffing his cheeks with food. He'd get his big head stuck in the mesh!! Great photos Spritz.

The town pigeons are public enemy number one here in Bristol as they make so much mess on buildings and seem to scare away all the wild birds, and, as you imply Spritz, they try to steal all the food.I don't really find Pigeons very attractive creatures I must confess.

LOL Very Clever Jumbo id say Spritz :)

Nor do I, Grenville - that's why the mesh got added - but still they come!

Certainly not a bird-brain after all! Hope he enjoyed his meal.

I to am not fond of wood pigeons, we have 2 here next door feeds them but when my False Acacia flowers the flipping things peck the flowers off, we have collared doves too and the coo coo in the morning drives me to distraction!!!

Think yourself lucky Sk...our parrot mimics everybird sound she hears....so you can imagine how many times we hear coo coo.She does a great take on the blackbirds alarm call too ! lol

i was at a garden centre yesterday. they were selling Kookaburra birds, it was such a sad sight to see it in a cage

That's just AWFUL, Eileen! I am really surprised that they are allowed to!

18 Feb, 2009

I agree he did deserve to have something to eat. good photos, enjoyed looking at them.

Thanks, Clarice. It's strange, there are two that come into the garden, the big fat one and his smaller mate maybe - the second one has not tried the gymnastics at all!

Pigeon pie is very nice so I am told Spritz....lol

DON'T tempt me. Dd - I just might - or Henry might catch him?? lol.

19 Feb, 2009

I can see you posting a picture of him getting stuck, at least he won' starve. You can then catch him and train him to send messages, may save on the stamps.

LOL - what a brilliant idea, Gail! He could deliver the plants I've promised to a couple of GOY members!

He's dtermined, we'll give him that. I know what you mean about the Jumbo jet, they cast a great shadow when they swoop down to the bird table!

21 Feb, 2009

he's deifintely not pidgeon-brained! Don't leave any plant labvels around - he can probably understand pidgeon English! - X

LOL..David !

22 Feb, 2009

Haha, David! Nice one!

I'm deffo with Grenville on this one. And many's the time we've dreamt of pigeon pie.

27 Feb, 2009

ah bless him, he does deserve some food. do you not put any on the ground for him? i usually do for our pidgeons, i know they can be a pest but they are still Gods creatures and in general they leave my plants alone if i put down a few scraps for them.

Yes, Angie, normally I would agree 100%, but they would eat everything and leave nothing for the endangered birds.

I wish they wouldn't sit on my primulas !!

Now you know that Henry is a stomach on legs... he would gobble up any food left on the grass! HE doesn't need feeding, does he!

lol i don't have a stomach on legs any more, but that was one of dearly departed Buddy's tricks too. i gues you do have to be careful of that one.
