The rooks are NESTING!!!

Sorry no pics, there are only two nests so far. Just hoping they won’t all follow suit yet a while.
We are just concerned about the usual strong winds of March – such a waste of all their efforts if the new nests are damaged.
What a very strange year its turning out to be. My back garden is full of flowers – can’t get over it! (Well perhaps full is overstating it a bit but its certainly bright and cheerful when the sun shines.)

Yes that's the trouble with March winds had it happen here some years back with a Black bird building a nest in my Wisteria by my back door I went shopping came back all four babies all fell out the nest the cat had one the other three dead even though I had the nest put back prior to this and they were OK the first time.

We have had blue tits popping in and out of one of the nesting boxes for weeks. They can't be nesting, surely! I reckon they have found a nice warm refuge!
Oh Thrupenny bit, I bet you were sad. A nuthatch hurled itself against a window the other day. I placed a cardboard box over it to protect it from cats and left it in the darkness. An hour later it had gone. and, thankfully, we still have two visiting regularly.

Yes as I watched and photoed it from nest eggs and babies I did do a blog on here some years back of them of the nest eggs and babies but deleted when this happened. Thank you Eirlys

Hi Strera .. what's the latest on the rooks ?

There are now well over two dozen nests. The noise is a bit less but the many droppings on the car are very trying. When there is an invasion of jackdaws though, the noise is terrific until they've been driven off. Don't know why they keep trying.I'll try to remember to tell you when the babies hatch - the deep Caw Caw is then taken over by quieter high pitched baby caw caws. And then things get very hectic!

Wow, Stera .. rook droppings in quantity seem scary !
Around my neighbourhood there are far too many wood pigeons, and if a pair try to nest near my back door, I send them elsewhere, because their droppings are very messy and dangerous to my pets.

Nice to hear your rook news. I don't have rooks,I have nesting jackdaws. They have got entry into an unoccupied house at the bottom of my garden, a nice dry place for them & the nests are all lined with the cat fur I put out for the tits. The blue tits have ignored the box they nested in last year. I'm wondering if all the jackdaws have put them off.

The bigger birds do deter the smaller ones. A few weeks ago, two robins were investigating my nest box, but then blackbirds built a nest just above that same area, and the robins moved away.

Lol Feverfew - jackdaws can be noisy too! Sometimes a flock try their luck at taking over the rooks' trees and you should hear the racket as the rooks see them off! Love the idea of lining the nests with cat fur...
Well - today I heard the first baby rooks -a very high pitched but loud little caw caw!
Terra sorry your robins moved. We have had a pair around all winter but sadly never heard them sing - so disappointing as robin song is one of the best bits of winter.
