Last year I put new paved steps in the garden and I was really unhappy with them they looked so out of place . So I talked my dear hubby into ordering some railway sleepers, which he did bless him.
The first pic is of the horrible paved steps,
Well the sleepers were delivered and of he went,
Its hard going by hand, bet he wished he hadn`t started.
He helped me lift the old paving slabs and put the sleepers in place, then I back filled and gravelled and I am very pleased with the result, all they have to do now is weather.
While he was doing his bit I sat relaxing taking in the heady perfume of the Trachelospermum jasminoides, before getting down to work.
Its been a wonderful productive day and glorious weather to boot, so we`re off to have a shower and I think we deserve a G & T.

I like them. they look really nice.
I don't want to put a damper on your enthusiasm but I hope they don't get slippery in the rain.
But they do look nice.
I remember sawing through a railway sleeper when I lived in the other house. - Never again ! lol

A great improvement.
The point Hywel makes about them becoming slippery in wet weather is a good one. One way to avoid this would be to give the a coat of matt varnish and while it is still damp, sprinkle sharp sand on it - it gives the texture of sandpaper. Dinghy sailors use the technique on the inside of their boats so I know it works

Thanks Dido. Andrew will take that tip on board and get it done while the weather is warm and dry.

That's a better looking set of steps, much more chic than in the first photo ! Shame on you for letting him use a hand saw though, he'll have bulging muscles on his right arm now. Give him 2 G & T's later to make up and sit him beneath the parasol !
