POOR LITTLE SPARROW,
By stroller

This was taken thru the window so I apologise for the image, a sparrow hawk killing its prey a poor little sparrow.
This is the first time I have seen a sparrow hawk in the garden.
It took off with its prey but I was too slow to get another shot.

We have one here, he regularly trips across the garden and scares the birds out of their wits. I have seen carcasses in the field too, but that is life, he needs to eat. Just wish he ate his dinner away from my house where I feed the birds, it makes me feel guilty. He seems to know just when to come and grab the little ones. Pesky creature. :O(

Wonderful birds, I love watching the raptors - they are so acrobatic. We have a regular visitor; sometimes it catches a bird but mostly it doesn't.

Nature is so cruel isnt it Phyl, I have also had Sparrow Hawks in the garden one took the head off one of my friendly Wood pigeons, I was upset but at the end of the day they are birds of prey arent they!

We have a female sparrowhawk that regularly hunts through our garden. She is such a beautiful creature and I don't mind losing the pesky pigeons.

Thats nature and sadly House Sparrows are listed as an endangered species.

Like you all mention its the natural way of things, but I would rather not see it happen.

I don't really like sparrow hawks, they kill slowly. I wouldn't hurt one, but I'm always pleased to see them chased off by squirrels or crows:-)

Oh that sounds awful :o(( Why do people say that nature is wonderful ... I suppose it is sometimes, but things like this are so cruel.

Hywel if you ever watch Q.I. you hear of much worse things such as zombie ants. They become as zombies as they are parasitised by the Cordyceps fungus. This fungus caused them to climb to the top of the tree then the fungus spores burst out of their heads leaving dead ants behind...yeuch:-(

I always switch Natural History programmes off as soon as the killing starts. Hate David Attenborough.

We had one do the same in our garden in Glasgow. It waited for the sparrow to stop struggling before it flew off.
