Hey! The Sun Came Out so we got going...

After soo many dark dreary grey days, today its glorious. I knew it would be of course because I believe everything the weatherman tells me (well…sometimes..).
I got up at 5.30am because I bought fresh steak and kidney from the farm shop a couple days ago and because my tum wasnt quite the thing I hadnt cooked it. So I decided to do it before I had breakfast…just in case! I’d bought enough to make about 4 steak & kid pies so it took over an hour to chop up and fry off before putting into slow cooker.
I’ve not been around much the last couple of days because I was trolling the net for a special christmas pressie and also I wanted more shelving for my ever growing nursery of plants.
I found the pressie, and also the shelving. Cheap and cheerful folks, and like the sheds, it all snaps together so no screwdrivers. Yes its lightweight and probably will only last a few years, but its just what I wanted.
I wouldnt suggest standing them out in the open, but tucked against a wall and the side of the greenhouse is okay and they are surprisingly stable.
Then we collected all the plants that I had split and potted on, that were scattered all over the garden and patio and put them in their new homes. There is such a sense of satisfaction about having everything organised and neat..in the garden anyway (I hate housework!). So now I can use my greenhouse for plants and potting..its great to use a compost bag as a potting “tray”, wayward handfuls of compost stay in the bag, and dont end up on the floor!
So everything neat and shipshape..
And while we were doing all this, the birds just ignored us and went on eating..we have feeders in all three trees and they were queueing up to eat! Sparrows, tits, chaffinches, goldfinches and magpies, and collared doves on the ground cleaning up!
And now, if we are really quick, we can go for a walk in the woods before the clouds come back.

everything looks so neat Tetra well done, you could drill a few holes and put them eyelet screw things in the wal to secure the frames with garden wire, im only saying that cause iv done it with mine against fence to stop high winds taking it out of the garden, its happened to other members plastic grow houses and mine to, hope you dont mind the suggestion, happy gardening :o))

I have put 3 bricks in the base of mine, it's up against a fence, but a really strong wind might just blow it over without them! You must be feeling very satisfied after so much tidying. Hope you enjoy your walk in the woods.

Added to GoYpedia Storage Ideas. :o)))

You have been a busy bee Tetra, it all looks so well organised, hope you enjoyed your walk.

Thats a lot of plants Tetra and good to get them all sorted for the winter, still hoping its not as bad as last year, I use those stands in my greenhouses in winter then stand them out through the spring and summer, they are ideal and not heavy when moving them around, you want to add a potting tray to santa`s list, not expensive but proved to be very useful when it comes to potting up, saved a lot of my compost since using one.....

lovely Blog tet, you have been busy, when I started looking I thought you had a garden centre there with all the pots lined up,

Thank you everyone..hang fire..just getting me halo out to give it a rub!! You all make me feel like Ive..well, we! have really achieved something. And all those great hints, no, dont worry in the slightest Sanbaz and Shirley, great tips! think I will tie the "greenhousy" one to elder in hedge and get oh to drill hole in aluminium of greenhouse for the other side, and I was going to have a climbing rose and clematis on the wall Sanbaz, been nagging OH to put up some wires. The threat of all those pots falling over will make him put a spurt on! The bricks I will use when I have less pots Shirley, everything is cram packed at present but put bigger pots down below instead. The whole shebang only cost £50 incl. delivery. ordered Monday, came Tuesday, up by Wed..
You are right about potting tray Lincslass, the bag works but a box would be nicer!
Glad you have sunshine Jacquie, raises the spirits dont it! And that you are seeing birdies in your garden..I can see a bird bath on your Christmas list! Btw I have put little JK labels on a few of those plants, just to make sure I dont give them away.
I'm actually going to have a plant sale in the spring Yorkshire, a few local people have expressed interest as they had heard of my garden. (I have a well connected good friend & neighbour!)
Thanks TT, Im really chuffed about that..and although not heavy duty stuff, really does the job and is cheap.
Thanks Lily, Johnjoe, glad you enjoyed it. Hey Stroller, would you believe, the phone went twice..the window cleaners turned up, then a neighbour popped over..no walk grrrrr...

I think a plant sale is a brilliant idea,

Certainly does look organised But would worry about winter winds taking the whole lot over.
Here is what i would do ,get Ken to drill two holes in the wall one just below each top shelf put a plastic plug in each a screw next with large Round head in each plug, screwed in but not right in leaving enough room to wind a fairly thick garden wire around the underside of the head at least twice then around your shelf under and over and tie back to the other end near the screw that way you may loose the odd pot but not the whole lot.
A washer if you have two slipped over the screws would stop any chance of the wire slipping over the screw head.
You know where i am if i have not explained it well.

24 Nov, 2010
Thanks Brian, if you are concerned knowing where they are standing, I will get Ken to do that. Ive just explained it to him. Your explanation is quite clear. And thanks for your advice yesterday btw. Got two bags 10mm and will get one bag of 1-4mm for cuttings.

I like that green shelving. I have some of that in the garage, and you've just reminded me about it. I was thinking of what I could use to give me some staging in my shade garden, and that stuff would work a treat and not stand out too much either! Thanks Tetrarch! Another sunny day here today and it's snowing now so brace yourselves all you further south! Glad your tum is better! Funnily enough, I've been having similar myself since last week..but better now...must be some synchronicitous tummy trouble going on! lol :))
24 Nov, 2010
We were just wondering where exactly the snow was falling, sorry it's with you, Karen. Did you swallow a dictionary with your supper tonight ... lol! Man.Utd v Rangers live on TV ... but I'm sure you know that already! : o ))
24 Nov, 2010
LOL!! Watching Nigel Slater doing his magic with the veggies in his lovely sunny garden..ah, summer......sigh!
24 Nov, 2010
Just keep thinking of your holiday in January ... the sun is always shining there. : o ))
24 Nov, 2010
Yes Karen, watched the forecast short while ago and thought of you up there with the snow. Not sure if this early for you but dont like it this early in the south. My birthday is in February and one thing I ALWAYS remember is that around about the mid/end Feb the weather is freezing and icy! Had a bad double freeze last year and a few plants were forced out and died including my monarda.
Funny that Cristina..its true it never feels like work..Ive even been out there at 4am in the morning, pottering in the greenhouse (we have outside light down the side of the house), thick socks, old baggy cardi, and a big shawl scarf..good job no one can see me!!
Oh Karen, I must tell my doc next time I see him that I had a synchroni.....thingy tummy! I can just see his face...he's a very prim guy! lol!
24 Nov, 2010
LOL! I agree about work....I did five hours yesterday and it felt just like a good day's playing!! It is indeed very early for us. We hardly ever get ANY snow and when we do, it's usually ....February/March!! So, yes, quite a shock to my system!

Lovely blog..
25 Nov, 2010
It's great to have everything in order isn't it. I'm pleased for you.
I hope you were able to have your walk :o)
25 Nov, 2010
Thank you Hywel, I can be an untidy so and so at times, but strangely, in the garden (maintenance side) I do like things in their place, makes it so much easier in a restricted space.
No walk regretfully, phone, window cleaner and neighbour put paid to that!
25 Nov, 2010
That's a shame. Maybe another day. Perhaps you'll show us some photos of where you go :o)
25 Nov, 2010
I will do that Hywel, though would be hard put to match Welsh scenery. Went to the caves of Og, near Ystrad Mynach? a long time ago and walked to the Sgwd yr Eira waterfall...fabulous place, did a week in Snowdonia, a weekend around St Davids and Aberystwith...just driving thru Wales is a holiday!
25 Nov, 2010
I must be on a permanent holiday then lol.
I'm sure you live in a nice place though. I think everywhere has it's own charm :o)
25 Nov, 2010
A case of the grass is greener? lol! Yes you are right, we are lucky to have the views when we live only 2 miles from the centre of the city. But its also only 2 miles from the Ashton Court Estate (Lady Smythe's it used to be, owned by Council now) and lovely for walks in the woods and they have a good rose garden too. Manic during the balloon festival tho!
And we have 3 parks all within a mile of us..nothing spectacular, but green spaces nevertheless. Used to go trainspotting in one of them when I was a kid.
25 Nov, 2010
Everything looks so healthy, a great investment methinks.
Great to see the sun.......let us pray that all the bad weather is behind us now.
12 Jan, 2011
I hope all my irises survive, I have some beauties. But I did notice a couple of kniphofia divisions seem to have given up the ghost..and all this rain we are now having doesnt help..small plants do rot easily in the wet weather..
12 Jan, 2011
Yes I know what you mean, I have several plants that dislike the rain.......impossible to win really?

You are very organized....and your shelving gear looks just the job. I hope you got out for your walk....it's glorious sunshine here today although a definite nip in the air. I've got windows open and the fresh air coming into the house is most welcome :)
We've had quite a few birdie visitors to our garden this morning too...hiding away and collecting bugs in the high bare branches of the hawthorn. I could only identify blue tits and robins...but there were plenty...along with one or two other varieties that I couldn't see close enough to identify. You've had your birdie visitors too....a really welcome sight :)
Enjoy your day, T. x
