Putting Succulants to bed
12 comments
Got home from work early enough to dodge the rain and put the succulants to bed in the greenhouse.
I have in the past covered these with a fleece just gice them a bit of protection when it’s at it’s coldest. This year though I am pushing for an outdoor socket, so I can get a small heater to come on when the temperature dips. Also I can then constructed a heated bed for early growth.
I then need to get some fresh straw for the crowns of the tree ferns. These I stuff in the crown and wrap the neck with some fleece.
These are just a few photos, to show what colour I have left in the garden. Dahlias need lifting and perenials need cutting down but that can wait for a while as I make the most of them.

WoW I mean ..... WOW you have a stunning garden T&T. I am not looking forwards to taking care of my perennials this year. :~((
I don't have my greenhouse up yet and only two window sills in our house (our bedroom and the kitchen!)

Lovely blog some pretty flowers you have also a nice selection of succulents, with the tree ferns do you wrap the hole base of the trunk or just the neck.

Morgana, I place straw in the crown and then place fleece over this and wrap it around the neck of the fern just at the base of the fronds.
Kind of like a big scarf.

Lots of lovely plants still in flower. It would be a shame to cut them down. Good luck with your succulents.

Thats one type of pot plant I have not yet thought about growing. But it is food for thought. My Dahlias still have some blooms on. I don't like to cut them down. but It will be hard to catch up with jobs if I don't at least cut some, to get the work load down
great garden you have Frank

Im the same T&T, can't bring myself to cut them back yet..
Do you tie the fronds up? mine go in the greenhouse, Fleece stuffed into the crown then wrapped around the trunk and leaves tied up for extra protection, i cut them off when the new fronds show as they turn a bit brown..
Love your Succulents especially the Dark one on the floor of your greenhouse, sorry forgot the name..

I was going to ask about the tree ferns too....do you just leave the croziers as they are or do you bend them over the crown?
