First frost..

It frosted up here for the first time last night when I was on the nightshift, it was only for a few hours but that,s the start.
I got a load of bubble wrap from work so when I got up today I went into the garden to insulate my mini greenhouse.
gave it a couple of covers of the bubble wrap and put carpet on the shelves and then the cover back on.
it should be enough to keep my hardy and not so hardy fuchsia,s alive.
the more tender plants have been put into the coldframe which has been covered with a carpet and some potted shrubs have been moved into a protected area and stood close together.
I went down to the garden centre to get some coleus seeds but couldn’t get any, couldn’t even get a coleus plant to use for cuttings so will need to order them from online somewhere.
But I did get a nice indoor umbrella plant for the house for a fiver so the trip wasn’t wasted.

Not sure if we had a frost last night....but it was dead chilly first thing this morning! I've brought the rest of the geraniums into the house today, and finished cutting back the fuchsias for the greenhouse. My fleece covers for the mini GH's have arrived, and will be putting them on tomorrow like you San :)
It's early here for frost....usually get the first one at the end of October...:(((

are my geraniums best in the house to Di ? in shed at the moment

7 Oct, 2009

Hmmm....good question San :) You can keep them "dormant" in the shed throughout winter, but I prefer to keep mine alive and kicking in the house. They are still in flower, and look pretty on the window sills, but I know they'll get on my nerves by December, lol....

That's early for frost :o( We don't usually get it here until at least mid/end Nov . I preffer the rain.... lol

Frost?!! - Hubby's gone to back to Blighty for a week for work reasons so he's going to be in for a shock - its still 19 degrees here at night. Rather him than me :-))

I,ve got some baby aquilegia, penstemmon, delphinium and a couple of ferns and 6 sweetpeas that i,ve brought in the house.
I couldn,t wait till next year had to try some just now..lol probably all die though but nothing gained...

Hywel, i agree about the rain - i quite like it, the cold i hate though.
As for first frosts, they're usually November too, we don't get a lot here.

it,s just started raining here but it's like icy rain.. thermals needed for work tonight I think.

7 Oct, 2009

Oh heck Usernut, that sounds ominous....
It's been a lovely sunny day here....no rain....but clear sky tonight, so that means a drop in temperature :((
It's the price we northerners pay for sunny autumn days....

WOW....we've been having frosts most nights since well before the full moon. Not hard down here in the town as we are next to the sea.....but 3 miles inland where I go with the dogs every morning - it is crisp and pure white and the grass is sparkling. By the time I get round and back to the car - it has all gone....that's usually about 8am.
Just 16 miles south of here - my chum has had to SCRAPE his car windscreen most mornings for the past week!
But then we DID have 2 inches of snow up on the Cairngorms at the weekend with that big storm/gale we had.
Soon be Xmas, folks!!

Its been pouring all day here in Essex, and the temperature is dropping fast........Looks like we have had the best for this year folks...........

I haven't even thought about bringing plants in for the winter........ HELP ! ! ! ! !

7 Oct, 2009

We are forecast for frost again tonight but its going to be milder after that (sez she..lol) we don't normally get frost this early...hope that is not a hint of whats to come...((:

Me neither Ian...double help!! Are plants really ok in the greenhouse with just bubblewrap? What about osteospermums & cistus in pots?

7 Oct, 2009

I'm putting my geraniums in my greenhouse this next couple of weeks, infact keeping my eye on weather forcast every day, as it is getting colder at nights.

7 Oct, 2009

Hi Fluff - If you have them in pots - they might be at risk - but frankly I would plunge the pots in the ground and that would protect the roots - then put a heavy layer of mulch/leaf mould over them.....especially the osteospermums. Don't cut them down - that way the frost can have the dried out foliage (lol) acting like a mulch again - and that stops the frost getting down into the plants. Other than that they should do fine. My cistus never seem to bother much ...they are tougher than they look!

7 Oct, 2009

We also had our first frost this morning usernut, was really cold had to put plants that are still in full bloom into shed , seemed so unusual Lol :~)))

7 Oct, 2009

Fluhh, i,ve got baby osteospermums in pots so i hope they'll be ok, the wee greenhouse is in a sheltered spot.

8 Oct, 2009

I'm still working on the shed!! Oh, well, time to take in the ones I know about! Its pretty frosty at night here too, & tonight is REALLY Cold!

8 Oct, 2009

it's supposed to be 6 deg here tonight with a touch of rain but the sky is clear so it will freeze up tonight.

8 Oct, 2009

Thanks Alz...I could plunge the pots in the soil of the old cow trough for the winter...that would be the same hopefully.

8 Oct, 2009

Keep that back warm, Usernut!

8 Oct, 2009
