Frogs!

It doesn’t take much to excite me these days and today was no exception.

After changing our pond a couple of years ago, the frogs we had disappeared and sadly there haven’t been any sign of them returning…until today.

We’ve let the pond develop as naturally as possible, with little interference. Today, as I gazed into the water, just generally checking things were ok, when I saw a movement out of my eye corner…and there he was…a frog!

After more careful examination, I saw two more. I can’t tell you how excited I was. Now the pond is complete…although I’d love to see a dragon or a damsel fly. Perhaps that will be in my next blog…fingers crossed.

I know exactly how you feel Waddy, not saying it was intentional>:-{ but my next door neighbours built a pond and stole my newts! Now they too are back along with a percentage of my frogs. I have seen damselfly and dragonfly lavae and others too (some look like leaches yuk) so I'm a happy Bunny too

Oh BA, that's fantastic. I shall continue to monitor the pond's wildlife with bated breath.

That's pretty exciting! The damselflies should be along before too long, fingers crossed. Our cat caught a dragonfly couple of days ago - what a waste of a good insect...

Two years is a long time to wait but you can't hurry other Nature. If you get too many frogs PM me ! BA so pleased you got some newts back!

that's brilliant news. I know we have them in the garden and I still get a thrill when I see them. You will get all sorts of insects flying in to live in and around your pond.

We all get very excited about out pond residents don't we? And why not? Nothing in the garden gets me more excited than seeing a newt swimming in the pond. The other day, while building the rockery, I lifted a stone and there was a little frog under there. Haven't seen a toad this year, but they are my least favourites....bit ugly aren't they? But nevertheless...welcome!

I know that feeling Waddy, I danced a jig a couple of weeks back because I saw a newt in our bottom pond, as you know we have plenty of frogs but this is the first time I've ever seen a newt here, now I know why, after having loads of frogspawn my taddies nearly all disappeared, I didn't know that newts eat tadpoles....

Get your excitement where you can Waddy! Personally I would be more excited over something like that than any 'Celeb' or Sports person doing something and having it reported on the TV. After all will any of them greatly affect our lives, probably not and in a year or two they will merge into obscurity, not like nature which (mostly) ignores all the garbage, literal and figurative, that we chuck at it and just carries on. As for newts, we had them in the big pond but were never sure whether the fish ate them. However we also have a sunken boat without fish, overgrown and left to it's own devices. Topping it up out of the water butt the other day, I thought I would just pond dip some of the dead looking pond weed floating on the top. My bucket came up with loads of moving creatures, some I knew were newts (legs) some not sure. OH inspected and declared they were all newts some just growing legs. One quick pond dip gave at least a dozen, so hopefully there are LOADS!

That's wonderful news Waddy I love to see the dragonflies our only walk at the moment is a footpath to the marshes where we are safe from 'people' ( hubby is still waiting for his op ) we see Dragonflies galore there its an amazing sight ...

That's great Waddy ! I would have been the same. We only have a raised pond here , so unfortunately don't get any frogs or newts, but in Willow Cottage , we had them all including dragon flies and I do miss that!

Steragram2 : I had thought I would see something before now. Thankfully I don't have a cat to worry about doing what they do naturally, although there are one or two which 'visit'.

Seaburngirl : Oh I do hope you're right. Perhaps the weather needs to improve first 😉

Karen: I've heard that it's unusual to get newts and frogs in the same pond, but I'm not so sure. Your experience seems to say otherwise. I'm in agreement with you about toads, ugly aren't they, but still useful in the garden.

Lincslass: I nearly did a jig myself lol! On the flipside, there was a picture posted on social media today of a frog eating a goldfish! I live and learn.

Honeysuckle : You're so right with regards to excitement over so called 'celebs' I can rarely see what all the fuss is about. I really like the image of your sunken boat, what a great idea.

Amy2: I'm sorry your hubby is still waiting for his op. How frustrating for you both. I hope you're not waiting much longer. On the subject of dragonflies, the best I ever saw was while we were on holiday on the Norfolk Broads. With the best will in the world, I can't see me getting anything like as beautiful as they were...but you never know.

Rose: I didn't know a raised pond prohibited the arrival of frogs etc. Hopefully you might get some pond visitors in the future.

Waddy we had a phone call this morning to say hubby's operation has been cancelled yet again its now August if we're lucky 😓 x

17 Jul, 2020

Oh Amy I'm so sorry to read that. You must both be so frustrated! I know lots of hospital waiting lists for what they class as routine operations are now really long, thanks to Covid, but that doesn't help you and your hubby. I do hope you get something positive really soon. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I'm glad the frogs finally took up residence. Hope to see some photos some day. I'm sure they are happy as you are.

They're very shy Paul, but I'll do my best!
