Grass roofs in Norway

This is a very interesting way of increasing the “green” in the environment…not to mention that it looks absolutely wonderful….(sorry I can only post a link but it is well worth a look).
These roofs are even planted up with seedum, evergreen trees etc., in addition to grasses. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see these for real?
So…here’s the link

I hope you find it interesting :)

the've been doing it for many years, we went to scandinavia over 20 years ago and many of the chalets high up had grass rooves ( good insulation) and have just come back from a visit to Guernsey where a 'new build' overlooking a beautiful cove has a grass roof installed

2 yrs ago just after I joined, a member posted a photo of a bus shelter in Ireland, which had a grass roof lol.

Yes, Pam...the new builds with environmental awareness has prompted developments with grass roofs in various parts of the world. I like the idea very much...although I must admit I was attracted to the houses of Norway as well because most seemed to be constructed from wood/logs. I like wooden houses or real stone but around here most all the houses are constructed in brick.
Good for Guernsey for the new build with a grass roof.

We should have a GOY trip to Norway. They have the most northerly botanic garden in the world. You can go in summer and see the midnight sun!

Woopee.....never seen the midnight sun before. Can just see us all coming back home and "designing" our garden roofs! lol

i dont fancy the idea on my house with the weight and bugs to, but iv seen it done on sheds in gardens, it was on a garden program with sedum etc, thats nice, thanx Wlass for showing these ;o))

Yes, San I can understand concerns with weight and bugs! I think doing this on a shed (and with sedum) it would be quite attractive. Thanks for your comment, San. :)

Of course there is always thatch!

Love thatch, M...but the fire hazard would worry me. Not sure if the same hazard applies to garden roofs. Maybe I need to take a trip to Norway to investigate? lol

I've heard of this. I think it's a good idea. I'll have a look at the link this evening when I have more time.
